Wind gusts reach 53 mph overnight
A high-wind warning remains in effect until noon Sunday, as wind gusts overnight reached nearly 55 mph.
Meteorologists expect the strong winds to continue into the early afternoon, tapering off during the evening hours.
"For the second half of the day, you'll see less wind," said Elyse Hagner, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in State College. "We had a very strong cold front come in overnight that brought some snow flurries. It's not unheard of for this time of year."
Gusts of wind measured at the York Airport measured 53 mph overnight, according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Evan Duffey. Harrisburg International Airport measured gusts at 55 mph.
York County 911 said they received dozens of calls for down trees and wires overnight.
Power outages: Scott Takac, spokesman with Met-Ed, the county's largest electricity supplier, said Saturday they have known about the potential for high winds since Friday and are prepared for outages.
“Whenever you have high winds, there’s gonna be some outages,” he said.
"We're way out in front of it," Takac added. "We've got crews ready."
Takac said crews will address outages with the most customers affected first, and then work their way down to the smaller outages.
Crews are out working Sunday morning to restore power to more than 1,000 people across the county. According to the Met-Ed outage map, power should be restored to most customers by 6 p.m. Sunday.
Takac also urged people to call them immediately if they see a downed power line.
"The biggest thing is to stay away from downed lines," he said, adding that people should call 1-888-544-4877 to report outages or downed power lines.
He suggested people use the Met-Ed outage map to locate where the outages are and when they are expected to be resolved.
"We're used to this, especially this time of year, and we're ready," he said.
