Flickinger watch party set for Tuesday in Spring Grove
The Spring Grove Chamber of Commerce will host a watch party in Spring Grove on Tuesday night to help cheer on Hali Flickinger as she competes in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Flickinger, who is a graduate of Spring Grove High School and a former member of the York YMCA, will swim on Tuesday in the 200-meter butterfly event. If she makes it through the preliminary swim on Tuesday afternoon as one of the top-16 swimmers, she will then compete in the semifinals on Tuesday night, when she'll have her hometown fans cheering her on. The prelims are set for noon on Tuesday and can be streamed online at NBCSports.com.
The watch party is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Spring Grove Community Park, 205 E. Railroad St. NBC will air the swimming live beginning at 9 p.m. and, should Flickinger be in one of the two semifinals, she'll swim shortly after 9 p.m.
The park will show the race on a 20-foot-wide, by 11-foot-high screen at the park. Popcorn and other food and beverages are expected to be sold for any spectators who show up to cheer on Flickinger.
Flickinger is the first York County swimmer to compete in the Olympics since 1996, when Whitney Metzler finished eighth in the 400-meter individual medley at the Atlanta Games.
