A longtime NFL assistant coach is again returning to his area roots to offer instruction to scholastic football players from the York-Adams region.
Jacksonville Jaguars offensive line coach Pat Flaherty will play host to the fourth annual Mason-Dixon Linemen Clinic on Saturday, June 23.
Football players entering grades seven through 12 can attend the clinic and get some one-on-one instruction from a number of coaches, including Flaherty.
The clinic will be held at Delone Catholic High School's J.T. Flaherty Field in McSherrystown. Flaherty is a 1974 Delone grad. J.T. Flaherty, a longtime coach at Delone, was Pat Flaherty's father.
“Coach Flaherty personally demonstrates each drill to the players,” clinic volunteer George Neiderer said in a news release. “He then walks around and offers advice to the players as they perform each drill. There’s a lot for the kids to learn and coach Flaherty engages them every step of the way.”
This year, Flaherty has invited elementary, junior high and high school coaches to a one-hour coaches’ clinic before the start of the clinic. The coaches clinic will start at 7:30 a.m. Flaherty will present techniques with a safety-first approach and then have a question-and-answer session with attendees.
Attending coaches are invited to stay and view players at the clinic, which begins at 9 a.m. Player registration for the clinic starts at 8 a.m.
“We noticed at past clinics, some of the coaches were taking notes throughout the day,” Neiderer said. “This is what led coach Flaherty to offer this new learning opportunity for our area coaches. We are so fortunate to have this type of instruction from someone so well-respected in the coaching arena.”
Flaherty has more than 17 years of NFL coaching experience. His coaching achievements have included two Super Bowl victories with the New York Giants. He has also helped several offensive linemen become Pro Bowl players.
Registration forms for coaches and players can be obtained on the clinic’s Facebook page (Mason-Dixon Linemen Clinic), on the Delone Catholic web site (www.DeloneCatholic.org) or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Proceeds from the clinic benefit the John Gastley Scholarship Foundation and the J.T. Flaherty Award. Gastley is a former Delone head football coach.
