Work progressing at Susquehanna


I got a chance to stop by Susquehanna Speedway on Saturday afternoon to check out the improvements being made there under the new ownership.

I wasn’t the only person taking advantage of a nice day to stop by and see what was happening. In the short time I was there, I spotted two current drivers, a former driver turned car owner and two former drivers on the grounds.

However, they weren’t all just checking things out. Some were hard at work volunteering their efforts at the massive reconstruction projects.

Former limited late model champ Dale “Smokey” Frye was working on a plumbing project in the rest rooms, while former driver/current car owner Clair Wintermyer was at work on heavy equipment.

Former limited late model driver Carl Hughes was deep in conversation with new track owner Scott Gobrecht, while late model star Gene Knaub was checking things out around the grounds. Street stock racer Mike Potts joined me in my walk around the grounds.

There were varied projects underway at the track. Of course, the work on the rest rooms was progressing, and it appears that new roofs have been installed on all the rooms located under the grandstands.

The project with the grandstands is progressing nicely. In addition to the “understand” roofs, all the old seating boards have been removed and work on the steel structural mounts for the new aluminum seating has begun. The new seating will include plastic folding seats from Charlotte in the center of the grandstand, with aluminum benches with backs, from Daytona, on the remainder of the grandstands.

Fresh clay has been added to the racing surface and groomed into the old clay.

Work is also progressing on the backstretch, where cement “jersey barriers” will replace the guardrails on the outside of the speedway. A new catch fence will be added there as well.

By the way, the new logos for Susquehanna show the track name returning to Susquehanna Speedway. The word park is no longer mentioned.  Of course, Susquehanna has had several names during its long time on the local circuit.  Midway Speedway and Super Susquehanna Speedway are others that come to mind.

Stock car champions: Two weeks ago I took a look at the open-wheel champions around the area, now it’s time to look at some of the area’s stock car champions for the 2015 season.

At Selinsgrove, Jeff Rine won yet another late model point title. For Rine, the title was his 11th at the track. Even more impressive, it was Rine’s ninth consecutive track crown there. Five of Rine’s nine wins this season came at Selinsgrove.

Mike Lupfer made it two in a row at Port Royal. This year, Lupfer won four times on his way to the title.

Newberrytown’s Jason Covert won his second in a row at the Potomac, Maryland, track. Covert won four times at Potomac this year.

According to its website, Hagerstown’s late model season ended with Andy Anderson and Marvin Winters tied for the point lead. Neither driver had won a late model title at Hagerstown before. Anderson won five time there, while Winters won three races.

In the limited late model ranks, Dover’s Billy Wampler won the Williams Grove title. Wampler won once at the Grove this season.

At Susquehanna, York’s Chase Billet secured the limited late model point title. Billet won four times at Susky this year.

Andrew Yoder won the econo late model point title at Port Royal in 2015. Yoder won just once on his way to the title.

Scott Palmer was the late model sportsman point champion at Hagerstown this season. Palmer won eight times at the Hub City oval this year.

The combined point championship for Lincoln and Trailway found Travis Mease picking up the title. Mease’s lone win came at Trailway.

Craig Morgan won the Wiliams Grove street stock title with a win on the season. At Susuqehanna, Scott Thunberg did the same thing.

At Selinsgrove, Brad Mitch won the title for the pro stocks with five wins to his credit.

Chris Ebersole won Hagerstown’s pure-stock title with four wins on the season there.

Williams Grove: Word is that both the USAC wingless sprint cars and the DIRT modifieds will return to Williams Grove Speedway for the 2016 season.
