It was a very busy weekend at BAPS Motor Speedway.
The track played host to the Street Stock Nationals, along with numerous other events.
The main event of the weekend was Saturday’s 50-lap street stock feature. In the end, Chad Smith scored a sweep of the division with quick time and a heat win Friday and then a victory in the main event Saturday. It wasn’t as easy as it sounds.
Smith chased Jasen Geesaman for 21 laps before first securing the lead, and then swapped the lead with Mike Walls seven times over the final 28 laps. Walls finished second, followed by Brian Walls, Felton’s Bob Scott Jr. and Jim Palm.
In the sportsman modified feature, Michael Burrows scored the win over Brandon Edgar, with Shawn Light, Craig Whitmoyer and Nate Klinger in the top five.
The 50 lap Xtreme stock event was declared official when a heavy rain storm hit the speedway after 20 laps had been completed. Manchester’s Travis Horan was the winner, with Windsor’s Sam Rial in second. Donnie Broderick, Newberrytown’s Alex Updegraff and Manchester’s Patrick McClane completed the top five.
The Legends feature that night was canceled because of the rain.
Action started Friday evening with qualifying for the street stocks and Xtreme stocks, along with racing events for the 305 sprints, legends and road warriors.
John Scarborough won the 305 sprint feature over Zach Newlin. Those two drivers ended the season in a tie for BAPS point title, with Newlin claiming the honors by virtue of his three season wins to two for Scarborough. Tyler Reinhardt, Billy Ney and Kyle Ganoe completed the top five in the race.
The legends cars had a make-up feature and a full program. In the make-up race, Chris McKinney scored the win over Spring Grove’s Harlon Leppo, Travis McClelland, Scott Houdeshell and Travis Perry.
The regular event found Mason Chaney edging Leppo for the win, with Jeremy Ott, Chandler Pagnotta and McClelland in the top five.
Kyle Rohrbaugh won the road warrior feature over Robbie Carroll. In Saturday’s road warrior event, those two drivers would exchange positions, with Carroll winning over Rohrbaugh.
Wolfe, Smith drive to 360 wins: Local drivers claimed 360 sprint wins far from home on Friday evening.
Central Pennsylvania 410 sprint point leader Lucas Wolfe drove to victory in the ESS sprint event at Dundee, New York, on Friday, while Mark Smith was a 360 sprint winner in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on Friday evening.
Pittman, Schatz capture Outlaw wins: The World of Outlaws sprint cars had a two-day show at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City over the weekend.
Friday, Daryn Pittman secured the win over Donny Schatz, Sheldon Haudenschild, Shane Stewart and Joey Saldana. Saturday, Schatz was the winner over Ian Madsen, Pittman, Brad Sweet and Brian Brown. Hanover’s Logan Schuchart was sixth with Brent Marks seventh.
Local rainouts: Local racing at Port Royal and Clinton County speedways was canceled Saturday because of weather.
