HOUSEHOLDER: More sad news for local dirt-track fans

  • The local dirt-track racing scene lost three more well-known personalities recently.
  • Jimmy Walker, Bob Chorpenning and Dave Zortman all died recently.
  • The Appalachian Mountain Late Model Speedweek will kick off this week.

It’s already been a tough year on the local racing scene.

We’ve been losing many longtime racing personalities from around the area. The past two weeks have been no exception.

Just before the World of Outlaws came to town, car owner Jimmy Walker died unexpectedly. Walker fielded the car that Dover’s Chad Trout has been driving.

Walker raced sprint cars himself in the 1980s, and then settled in as a car owner, producing winning rides for Bobby Allen and Steve Siegel in the 1990s. He stepped away for a few years and then came back as a driver in the super-sportsman ranks for a while before returning as a sprint-car owner.

Walker died on a Sunday after driving the team rig to Port Royal the day before.

Last week we lost two other men who have been a big part of local racing for many years. Bob Chorpenning died after a long illness. Chorpenning worked putting the program books together for Jack Gunn in the 1970s before settling in as a writer for Area Auto Racing News.

Before poor health settled in, Chorpenning actually worked full time for AARN, traveling from his home in Camp Hill to the paper’s New Jersey offices each week.

Most recently, Dave Zortman died. Zortman was from York and worked in video at a number of area tracks, most recently Susquehanna. He was a top-notch computer operator, and gave freely of his time with the York County Racing Club and other local racing groups

Zortman was also a gifted musician, and his compositions could be heard as background on the Thunder in the Pennsylvania Mountains tapes that Lynn Sheaffer produces.


Appalachian Mountain Speedweek: The Appalachian Mountain Late Model Speedweek will kick off this week and end the following weekend.

This year the series will race closer to home for many local fans.

Things kick off Wednesday evening at Hagerstown with $4,000 for the winner. Then, for the first time ever, the series moves to Susquehanna Speedway on Thursday evening. This will also mark the return of super late models to Susky after many years away. The Susky show also offers $4,000 to win. The limited-late models also compete that night.

Bedford Speedway will feature the Friday show this week, and it’s also the highest-paying show of the series with $5,000 for the winner. Saturday, the series moves to Port Royal, where the sprint cars also compete. The standard $4,000 to win is set for Saturday’s show, as well as Sunday’s show at Path Valley.

Then the series takes most of the week off before returning to Williams Grove next Friday, June 9. The sprints also compete at the Grove, with $4,000 for the late-model winner.

The Appalachian Mountain Late Model Speedweek wraps up Saturday, June 10, at Selinsgrove, where it’s again $4,000 to win. The 360 sprints also race.

Other racing this weekend: This weekend, Williams Grove hosts the sprints and the URC 360 sprints on Friday evening.

Path Valley has the wingless super sportsmen this week.

Trailway will take Friday off to prepare for Saturday’s AMA Motorcycle racing.

Saturday this week, the sprints, 358 sprints and limited-late models will race at Lincoln, while Selinsgrove offers the Kramer Cup for the URC 360 sprints. MidAtlantic Mods, econo late models and pro stocks also compete.

Hagerstown will race Saturday, but the late models get the night off for Speedweek. The late-model sportsmen, pure stocks and hobby stocks compete.

Susquehanna takes Saturday off, but returns the following Thursday with sprints and 305 sprints.

1972: Rain played a big role in the 1972 racing season, and this weekend was another that was hard hit.

Friday, Williams Grove had a feature rainout, while the entire show was washed out at Bedford. Sunday racing was also washed out at Susquehanna and Hagerstown.

They did race around the area on Saturday. At Lincoln, Bobby Allen drove the Emrich Chevy No. 1a to his third overall win of the season, while up at Selinsgrove, Wrightsville’s Bobbie Adamson was in victory lane for the ninth time that season in Al Hamilton’s No. 77. It was the sixth week in a row that the Hamilton team visited victory lane at Selinsgrove. Five of those wins went to Adamson, while Lee Osborne got the other.

At Port Royal that week, Elmer Ruby drove the family-owned No. 711 to his first win of the season. A brewery worker for Old German Beer, Ruby’s wing carried the slogan, “Swallow the Leader.”

Out at Jennerstown, they ran two features that Saturday night, with Ted Wise and Buddy Cochran getting the wins.
