Danny Dietrich raced to his first Ice Breaker 30 win in Saturday’s season opener at Lincoln Speedway.
Dietrich collected $4,000 for his victory in the 30-lap contest that was delayed by more than 4½ hours by a mid-event rain storm. The race ended shortly before 8 p.m.
“I told these guys all week we were gonna race. I expected to be done by 3 (p.m.), but we missed that by about a half-hour," Dietrich said, tongue planted firmly in cheek, “It was just another day.”
Dietrich started sixth in the race, and was steady in the top five as pole-sitter Tim Glatfelter, of Spring Grove, took the early-race lead. Glatfelter led until the 10th lap, when fifth-starter Brian Montieth worked his way to the top spot. Five laps later Glatfelter was back in the lead as Montieth drifted to the infield with mechanical problems.
Glatfelter held the lead over Fawn Grove’s Matt Campbell as Dietrich began his charge, which ended when Dietrich swept by both Glatfelter and Campbell in lapped traffic on the 20th lap. A lap later Glatfelter dropped from the event with mechanical problems.
Dietrich led the rest of the way to score the win over Lewisberry’s Kyle Moody, with ninth-starter, York’s Cory Haas, claiming third place. Gerard McIntyre Jr., who started 11th, and Freddie Rahmer, who started 10th completed the top five. Rounding out the top 10 were Campbell, 26th-starter Chase Dietz of York, Dover’s Chad Trout, who started 12th, Shane Hoff and Billy Dietrich.
Mark Smith wins twice in Florida: Local racer Mark Smith won two of the three races in Florida during East Bay Raceway’s 360 Sprint Winternationals.
Smith won Thursday’s opening race in the series, and came back to win the big event on Saturday. In Friday’s feature, Smith finished ninth, as Terry McCarl was the winner.
Several other local racers were at East Bay as well. Spring Grove’s Greg Hodnett had finishes of 10th, 15th and 12th, while URC racer Robbie Stillwaggon had runs of 16th, third and 16th. Lucas Wolfe finished 19th on Thursday, while Todd Gracey finished 20th on Friday.
