York's Rick Eckert captures Outlaws late model opener

York’s Rick Eckert won the World of Outlaws late model season opener at Screvens, Georgia, on Friday evening.

York's Rick Eckert earned $4,000 for winning the opening race of Appalachian Mountain Late Model Speedweek at Hagerstown Speedway on Wednesday night.

Eckert dominated the event, leading all 40 laps, to pick up the victory and $8,850 in prize money.

“It is important to start out early but we have to get through this whole Florida swing,” Eckert said on the World of Outlaws website. “It’s just the next night, and the next night, and the next night, and it’s a grind. We won here last year but I think we ended up coming out fifth or sixth in the points. I’d like to come out of Florida leading points and then see if we can fend them off the rest of the year, but it is a long year after that.”

Chris Madden won Saturday’s feature, with Eckert finishing 13th. Newberrytown’s Jason Covert finished 18th.

Schatz, Gravel take All Star features: Donny Schatz and David Gravel won All Star features at Volusia, Florida, on Wednesday and Thursday last week.

Schatz’s win on Wednesday came over Kyle Larson, Chad Kemenah, Daryn Pittman and Brad Sweet. Lucas Wolfe finished ninth, while Spring Grove’s Greg Hodnett was 14th and Brent Marks was 20th.

Thursday, Gravel bested Schatz, with Sweet in third. Kemenah and Caleb Armstrong completed the first five. Hodnett was 12th, Marks was 13th, Wolfe was 21st and Steve Buckwalter was 24th.

Johnson captures Outlaws sprint win: The World of Outlaws sprint cars opened their season Friday at Volusia, with Jason Johnson taking the win over Sweet.

Christopher Bell, Brian Brown and Pittman made up the top five. Marks was 16th, Danny Dietrich was 17th, Wolfe was 20th, Hodnett was 22nd and Hanover’s Jacob Allen was 24th.

Saturday's Outlaw sprint race was rained out.
