One of the great names in Baltimore Orioles history will soon make an appearance in York County.
Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. will appear at York Catholic High School at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 11, in the school auditorium.
Ripken, 57, will be interviewed on stage by Pat Principe, the sports director at WGAL Channel 8. Attendees will have the opportunity to be part of the interview process by emailing potential questions for Ripken to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Ripken is best known as baseball's all-time Iron Man. He retired from the game in 2001 after a career that spanned 21 seasons, all with the Orioles. That included a record streak of 2,632 consecutive games played.
The 6-foot, 4-inch, 200-pound shortstop/third baseman finished his career with a .276 average with 431 homers and 1,695 RBIs. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007 in his first year of eligibility, receiving a record 98.5 percent of the vote.
Ripken was also a 19-time All-Star, a two-time American League Most Valuable Player, the 1982 AL Rookie of the Year, a two-time AL Gold Glove winner, an eight-time AL Silver Slugger winner and was a member of the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.
In 2001, Cal and his brother Bill, who also played with the Orioles, founded the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation in memory of their father, a longtime coach and manager with the Orioles. Since then, Cal Ripken Jr. has become an international ambassador for the game, and has focused on growing it “The Ripken Way.”
