York Suburban standout Carson Gross has 1 meet left

  • York Suburban's Carson Gross is the defending Class AA champ in the 200 freestyle at the PIAA meet.
  • Gross won the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle at the District 3-AA event.
  • Gross holds the York Suburban school records in both the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle.

Carson Gross' legacy with the York Suburban girls' swimming program is recorded on the board mounted on a wall inside the swim complex.

York Suburban's Carson Gross, seen here celebrating after winning the 100-yard freestyle during action earlier this season, is hoping to add more state hardware this weekend at the PIAA Class AA Girls' Swimming Championships at Bucknell. She is the defending 200 freestyle champion.

Gross holds the school records in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, along with being part of three record-setting relay teams.

"She's up there for five of the 11 swimming events, which is pretty amazing considering she is also second all-time in the (200) IM and 500 (free)," Trojans' head coach Craig Brennan said. "Carson's definitely left her mark on York Suburban swimming."

Gross isn't done competing for the Trojans just yet.

She'll compete Friday and Saturday in the most prestigious meet of the season: the state championships.

She and her teammates will be at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium for the PIAA Class AA Swimming and Diving Championships.

Gross is seeded second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle. She is also part of the Trojans' 200 freestyle team, which earned a second-place seed.

"I'm excited for states," said Gross, who will swim next year at NCAA Division I Duquesne University. "It's most special to be on the relay one more time. I'll always remember the bonding we've done as teammates. York Suburban has a history of being a close team."

Speaking of team, the Trojans will have 13 swimmers at states.

"Seven girls and six guys, that ties for the most I've ever brought to states," said Brennan, who took over as head coach in 2010. "Thirteen is a lucky number for us."

Gross will return to the premier meet after winning the state gold medal in the 200 freestyle last year.

GIRLS' SWIMMING: Stars put on show

"I'm trying to meet the times I did at districts," said Gross, who captured the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle at this year's district meet. "I also want to have fun because I made it there and it's my final meet."

Other AA seeds: In addition to the 200 relay team, Suburban's 400 free relay team is seeded ninth.

Eastern's Madison Nalls is seeded fourth in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. West York's Erica Sarver and Northeastern's Lindsey Pope are seeded fourth and fifth, respectively in diving, and West York's Taylor Hoover is listed sixth in the 200 IM. West York's Meghan French is also in the top 10 with a 10th seed in the 500 freestyle.

On the guys' side, Suburban's Aidan Fryar is seeded sixth in 50 freestyle and teammate Matt Spinello is listed 10th in the 100 freestyle.

Gettysburg's Jared Herr is seeded seventh in the 500 freestyle and Suburban's 400 freestyle relay and 200 freestyle relay teams hold the fifth and sixth seeds, respectively.
