York-Adams Division I soccer races see first-place teams get knocked off over weekend
It was an eventful and exciting weekend in York-Adams League Division I soccer action.
It started Friday, when the Northeastern girls handed first-place Central York a 3-2 overtime setback. It was the Panthers' first division loss of the season.
Then on Saturday, the Central girls suffered a second straight D-I defeat, falling to Red Lion, 3-1.
On the boys' side on Saturday, Central York also had to go to overtime to earn a 1-0 triumph over Red Lion, handing the Lions their first Division I loss of the season.
When the dust had settled, the Red Lion girls (8-3-0 overall) found themselves alone in first place in D-I at 7-1, while Central (7-3-1 overall) and Dallastown (9-3-1 overall) were tied for second at 6-2. Northeastern (7-6-1 overall) is alone in fourth at 5-3.
In the wide-open D-I boys' race, Red Lion (7-2-1 overall) still leads the way at 7-1-1 overall, followed by South Western (7-2-2 overall, 5-2-2 D-I), Northeastern (7-5-1 overall 5-3-0 D-I), Dallastown (7-4-1 overall, 5-3-0 D-I) and Central York (5-6-2 overall, 4-3-1 D-I).
South Western inched close to the Lions for the D-I lead by beating Spring Grove on Saturday, 3-1.
In Northeastern's OT win over the Central girls on Friday, Anna Hetherington provided the game-winning score. Katie Snelbaker had Northeastern's other two goals, while Katie Shearer had 12 saves to record the win in goal for Northeastern. Anya Schnetzka and Chloe Carns scored for Central.
In Central's double-OT triumph over the Red Lion boys on Saturday, Alex Salter scored the game-winning goal, off an assist from Shane Buss. Brian Ponce had to make just two saves to record the shutout.
