When opposing coaches created game plans for the Central York HIgh School boys’ soccer team, marking Igor Gomes was always near the top of the list.
Gomes, an athletic play-maker who came to Central via Angola last year, just needed the slightest miscue to make opponents pay.
And pay they did.
After a season in which the senior scored 27 goals to go with 10 assists, Gomes was honored by the York-Adams League Division I coaches by being named the 2015 Division I Player of the Year.
With such outstanding numbers, while playing against the league’s biggest schools, Gomes had to figure he was a shoe-in for the award, right?
“I wasn’t ready for that,” he said of his honor. “This season wasn’t as great for me as last year, but I still think I did pretty good. So I just wasn’t ready for that award, but it’s always welcome.”
Gomes was one of four Central York players named a first-team all-star by the coaches, along with fellow seniors Jared Hileman, Jared Wagner and Mitchell Crane. Head Coach Frank Lenno was also honored as the Division I Coach of the Year after leading the team to a 22-4 overall record that included a Division I title and runner-up finishes in the York-Adams League and District 3-AAA playoffs.
There were certainly more than a few memorable goals this season for Gomes, but one that stands out was the one he scored against Dallastown during the regular season. Dallastown coach Matt Zimmerman was busy making some decisions on how to adjust after his Wildcats held a 1-0 advantage at the half. But before Zimmerman could make any changes, Gomes struck with a goal from the edge of the box to essentially ruin those plans.
“We had a game plan coming in,” Zimmerman said at the time. “But we gave him a shot, it went in and it just didn’t end up going for us after that.”
That was just one of the many big goals that Gomes was able to score for the Panthers this season, according to Lenno.
“He had a fantastic junior year at target forward, finishing with 20 goals,” Lenno said. “And he was able to step up his game with multiple defenders on him to score 27 this season, many of which were of high quality.”
Gomes, who completed his high-school career with 47 goals and 19 assists, cherished his time playing with all of his teammates these past two seasons. And he played the game with such an intense passion that it really endeared him to his peers and coaches.
“Above all, Igor is a terrific person and teammate,” Lenno said. “His enthusiasm and love of the game rubs off on all at training and matches.”
Gomes, who is looking to continue his soccer dreams in college, pretty much echoed that sentiment about his coach, who he really enjoyed playing for these past two years.
“He’s a really great coach,” Gomes said. “We’re going to be graduating nine seniors this year, but I think they’ll still be good next year because he’s a great coach. He doesn’t like to lose. And he’s got a great personality. He knows when to be serious, but also when to have a little fun too.”
Division II Player of Year — Adam Yingling, Gettysburg: Yingling was unquestionably the biggest talent on a Gettysburg team that cruised to both Division II and league playoff titles.
While the Warriors had dreams of chasing a state title, their inability to claim that gold could not be pinned on Yingling, who was named the Division II Player of the Year, after scoring 30 goals to go with 11 assists.
Division III Player of the Year — Johnny King, Bermudan Springs: The Eagle senior, who was named the Division III Player of the Year as a junior, had an another outstanding campaign in earning the honor once more.
King finished his high school career registering 20 goals to go with 12 assists.
