The Lancaster County Junior Golf Association earned the 2017 Junior War of the Roses crown on Wednesday, Aug. 9, with a 21.5-6.5 win over the York County Junior Golf Association side at Hanover Country Club.
Lancaster took a 9.5-4.5 lead into Wednesday afternoon's singles competition and then rolled during that session. Lancaster won 12 of the 14 singles matches to extend its lead and win the competition handily.
Lancaster took the first four singles matches of the day before York finally got a point of its own, thanks to a 4&3 victory by incoming Spring Grove freshman Karl Frisk in the fifth match of the day. The only other victory that York received on the afternoon came from Central York's Brady St. Pierre, who won 3&2 in the seventh match.
Lancaster went on to win the final seven singles matches. Four of the matches made it to the 18th hole, but all of them went the way of Lancaster.
Lancaster got out to a good start in the morning four-ball session, taking 4.5 of the possible seven points to build a two-point lead. York got victories from the teams of Spencer Beren/Andrew Roberts (1 up) and Frisk/Trevor Snyder (4&3). Brandon Simmons/Ty Gladhill earned the team a half point with a halve in their match.
Lancaster extended the lead even further with a 5-2 result in the foursomes portion of the competition. The team of Simmons/Gladhill (2&1) and Darin Wise/Ryan Menchey (3&2) were the only York teams to score points.
The fourball and foursome sessions were both only nine holes.
