DISTRICT 3 GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL: York Suburban, Spring Grove head for 3-A semifinal showdown
- The District 3 girls' volleyball playoffs started Thursday night with quarterfinal action.
- York Suburban and Spring Grove earned triumphs in Class 3-A.
- The Trojans and Rockets will meet in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday at York Suburban.
Two state-ranked girls’ volleyball powers from York County will square off on Saturday afternoon.
Only one will live on to fight another day.
York Suburban and Spring Grove both grabbed home quarterfinal victories on Thursday night in District 3 Class 3-A playoff action.
That sets up a semifinal showdown between the Trojans and the Rockets at 1 p.m. Saturday at Suburban. The winner will advance to the district final. The loser will see its season end.
The Trojans will enter that match at 15-0 and ranked No. 4 in the state in 3-A by the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association.
The Rockets, meanwhile, will enter the match at 11-2 and ranked No. 6 in the state in 3-A by the PVCA.

Suburban and Spring Grove did not meet in the regular season. Suburban won York-Adams Division II, while Spring Grove shared the Y-A D-I crown with South Western.
The No. 2 seed Trojans punched their ticket to the semifinals with a 25-17, 19-25, 25-19, 25-15 victory over No. 7 seed Lancaster Catholic (11-3).
The No. 3 seed Rockets advanced with a 25-18, 25-18, 28-26 triumph over No. 6 seed Twin Valley (10-3). Hailey Wolfe led the Rockets with 22 kills and 11 digs. Also for Spring Grove, Nevaeh Wolfe had 10 kills and 16 digs, Maddie Ruhland had 38 assists and six digs and Angalyn Strouse had four kills, four digs and three aces.
West York, South Western fall: In another 3-A quarterfinal match on Thursday, No. 1 seed Garden Spot rallied past No. 8 seed West York, 23-25, 25-9, 25-8, 25-20, in New Holland, Lancaster County. West York finished at 8-5.
Garden Spot (15-0), ranked No. 2 in the state in 3-A by the PVCA, will play host to No. 4 seed Fleetwood (14-0) in the other semifinal at 1 p.m. Saturday. Fleetwood beat No. 5 seed James Buchanan (11-3) in the other 3-A quarterfinal, 3-1.
The two 3-A semifinal winners will meet for the championship and a PIAA state playoff berth at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the home of better seed.
The only other Y-A girls' volleyball team in action on Thursday was No. 6 seed South Western, which dropped a 4-A quarterfinal match at No. 3 seed Wilson, 18-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15, 15-7.
Emma Filipovits led the Mustangs with 19 kills, nine digs and four aces. Also for South Western, Sarah Nicholl had 15 kills and four digs, Makayla Dyson had 44 assists, 16 digs and three kills and Kirby Meyer had 20 digs.
The Mustangs finished at 10-3. Wilson improved to 12-2. The Bulldogs move to the 4-A semifinals on Saturday afternoon at No. 2 seed Waynesboro (13-1), which beat No. 7 seed Hershey, 3-0. Hershey finished 8-3.
