Girls from Eastern York, Red Lion roll to York-Adams League girls' tennis singles championships
- Eastern York's Evelyn Whiteside won the York-Adams 2-A girls' tennis singles title.
- Red Lion's Lexi Lakatosh captured the Y-A 3-A championship.
- Neither Whiteside, nor Lakatosh, lost a single set during the tournament.
Eastern York’s Evelyn Whiteside and Red Lion’s Lexi Lakatosh won York-Adams League girls’ tennis singles championships in impressive fashion over the weekend.
The top-seeded Whiteside repeated as the Class 2-A champion by cruising to four straight-set victories. Whiteside lost just three games over those four matches. Whiteside earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over York Catholic’s Carina Roberts in the title match at New Oxford on Friday. Roberts was the No. 4 seed.
In the 2-A third-place match, Kennard-Dale’s Brianna Serruto downed West York’s Alisa Steele, 6-2, 6-2. Serruto was the No. 2 seed and Steele was the No. 3 seed. Whiteside had beaten Steele in last year’s 2-A title match. In the 2020 2-A semifinals, Roberts rallied past Serruto, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, while Whiteside beat Steele, 6-0, 6-1.

In Class 3-A, Lakatosh also won all four of her matches this year in straight sets, losing a total of six games. In the 3-A title match, the second-seeded Lakatosh, a freshman, downed her Red Lion teammate, Sophie Lanius, 6-2, 6-3. Lanius made a surprising run to the title match after coming into the event as the No. 6 seed.
No. 3 seed Sarah McComas of South Western won the league’s 3-A third-place match over No. 1 seed Rachel Haupt of Central York, 6-3, 7-5. In the 3-A semifinals, Lakatosh beat McComas, 6-1, 6-0, and Lanius rallied past Haupt, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.
This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, only league champions will qualify for the District 3 event in both 3-A and 2-A, meaning only Whiteside and Lakatosh will compete in the district event. The district singles semifinals in both classes are set for Monday, Oct. 19, with the singles championships set for Wednesday, Oct. 21. The sites have yet to be determined.
The league doubles tournament is set to start at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with first-round and second-round action at South Western (3-A) and Red Lion (2-A). The doubles semifinals and finals are set to start at 2 p.m. Thursday at New Oxford for both classes. The doubles event was originally set for Monday and Tuesday but was pushed back because of Monday's expected rain.
