Northeastern's Jillian Laughman and Eastern's York's Evelyn Whiteside are the 2019 York-Adams League girls' tennis singles champions.
The second-seeded Laughman upset top-seeded Meghan Salaga of Dallastown for the Class 3-A crown, rallying for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph.
Whiteside, meanwhile, pulled off a pair of upsets en route to the 2-A championship. In the semifinals, the third-seeded Whiteside downed top-seeded Brianna Miller of Kennard-Dale, 6-0, 6-1. She followed that with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over second-seeded Alisa Steele of West York, in the title match.
In five total matches in the tournament, Whiteside lost just six games. She had finished third in the 2018 2-A league tournament.
It was the first league title for both Laughman and Whiteside.
In the 3-A third-place match, Central York's Rachel Haupt defeated South Western's Emma Hynson, 6-3, 6-1.
In the 2-A third-place match, Miller downed her K-D teammate, Megan Hawkins, 6-3, 6-4.
District 3 team tennis: The District 3 Team Tennis Tournament brackets were recently released, with four York-Adams League teams earning berths.
In Class 3-A, Division I champion Central York (11-1-0) grabbed the No. 4 seed, while Dallastown (10-3) was seeded No. 8 and New Oxford (12-5) was seeded No. 10. In 2-A, Division II champion Kennard-Dale (15-0) is seeded No. 2.
On Thursday, Oct. 10, in first-round 3-A action at Hershey Racquet Club, Dallastown faces No. 9 Central Dauphin (11-3) at 3:30 p.m., while New Oxford meets No. 7 Carlisle (13-2) at 12:30 p.m.
Central York gets a first-round bye. On Monday, Oct. 14, the Panthers meet No. 5 seed Conestoga Valley (13-1) at Racquet Club West at 2:30 p.m. in a quarterfinal battle.
In a 2-A quarterfinal meeting on Thursday, Oct. 10, K-D meets No. 7 Lancaster Mennonite (10-2) at 3 p.m. at Racquet Club West.
Manheim Twp. (11-0) is the No. 1 seed in 3-A, while Wyomissing (11-0) is the No. 1 seed in 2-A.
