After collapsing on sideline, Pa. prep football player in coma after two brain surgeries
McDowell High School senior football player Jonathan "Johnny" Heubel is still recovering from two brain surgeries and in a medically-induced coma in a Pittsburgh hospital.
McDowell is located in suburban Erie.
Megan Heubel, Johnny's mother, recently posted an update on his condition.
"Our sweet Johnny he's fighting and he is fighting hard!!!!," the post said. "He is still in the current moment in a coma. We all know that we have to be patient and trust in God. Seeing my boy this way is the most difficult thing that any parent could ever experience. As I stated before, the only way that we are getting through these moments are from all of you and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We feel your prayers."
Johnny Heubel, a starting linebacker for the Trojans, collapsed on the sideline during a game against Cathedral Prep on Friday a few plays after making a tackle and walking off the field. He was immediately flown to Pittsburgh in a Life Flight helicopter. Heubel was sent right into the operating room for surgery and went through another procedure Saturday morning.
"The days ahead are crucial so we ask for your prayers to keep healing him and keep the fight up!!! I know this journey will take time, but we are by his side every step of the way!!!," read the post from Megan Heubel. "Thank you for believing in #23 our beautiful son!! I see all of you. I see all of your messages and your beautiful pictures. I talk to Johnny and I tell him how much love he is getting from all of you and I know he can hear me. We have hope!!!"
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page set up for the Heubel family has surpassed $40,000 with a goal of $55,000. More than 900 people have donated on the page.
