  • York Tech is coming off consecutive winless football seasons.
  • Matt Glennon is back as Tech's head coach. He also led the Spartans in 2013-2014.
  • Glennon says he'll focus more on the kids this year, and less on the X's and O's.

Editor's note: This is one in a continuing series of team previews for the 2019 York-Adams League football season:

For a team without a win in two seasons, the goal for York Tech’s 2019 football season is to begin a process of creating a successful program.

York Tech coach Matt Glennon rejoins the Spartans after spending the last four years as an assistant coach at various schools. Glennon was the head coach at York Tech from 2013 to 2014 before he resigned for personal reasons.

This time around, Glennon has adjusted his plan for the team based on what he learned from his coaching experiences over the years.

“Just focus on the kids more,” Glennon said. “In the past I was really focused on the schematic stuff, now I am focused on the kids and relationships and making sure we’re not overworking the kids.”

Although his focus is less on the X’s and O’s this season, Glennon said he did change the type of offense the Spartans will run this year. After operating in a spread offense for the past few years, York Tech will feature a run-based attack in 2019.

While the Spartans lost their lone 2018 York-Adams All-Star — running back DK Wyche — York Tech returns senior quarterback Ryan Gibson. Gibson is ready to be the team’s leader and isn’t looking back at the previous two winless seasons.

“Mentally, I try not to look at last year,” Gibson said. “Last year was last year and this is a whole new year. I just try to move on and hopefully have a good year this year.”

Glennon added that the kids who participated in the offseason workouts had exceeded his expectations this summer. While he and all the Spartans want to secure the team’s first victory since 2016, it’s not about wins and losses right now.

“We’re not focused on the end goal at this point, we’re focused on the steps to get there,” Glennon said. “Every day we’re going to focus on something small, if you build on the small things, eventually we’ll get to bigger things.”
