The PIAA state boys' volleyball championships begin Tuesday and two York County teams will enter in familiar territory in the state rankings.
Central York and Northeastern are each ranked No. 1 in their respective classes in the latest Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association polls after both wrapped up District 3 championships last week. The Panthers maintained their standing as the top 3-A program in the state after a dominating District 3 tournament, while the Bobcats moved up a spot from No. 2 after winning their fifth consecutive 2-A district crown on Friday night.
Central and Northeastern will head into the state tournament as the top seeds out of District 3. Because of the state rankings, however, each will also be looked upon as the team to beat in each class. The Bobcats overtook Manheim Central as the No. 1 team in the 2-A rankings after the Barons were beaten in the District 3 2-A semifinals by York Suburban. The Trojans went on to lose in three games to Northeastern in the championship match. Despite that loss, the Trojans were rewarded in the state rankings by moving up from fifth to third. Manheim Central is now ranked fourth in 2-A.
The only other York County program to crack the top 10 in either class was Dallastown. The Wildcats moved up from eighth to seventh in the latest 3-A rankings after finishing fourth in the District 3 tournament. Dallastown lost in the semifinals to Central York and then lost in five games to Penn Manor in the third-place match. The Comets are ranked fifth in the state.
The Panthers will face Central Bucks East in Tuesday's opening round of the 3-A tournament at Hempfield High School at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Dallastown's first state match will be against District 1 champion Pennridge at Quakertown High School at 7:30 p.m. Pennridge is ranked sixth in the PVCA state boys' rankings.
In Class 2-A, Northeastern will begin its quest for a fifth consecutive state title with a first-round match against Berwick on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Cumberland Valley High School. York Suburban will face Palumbo at 5 p.m. at Hempfield High School ahead of the Central York match.
