Northeastern's impressive first weekend apparently caught the attention of Pennsylvania's volleyball coaches.

The Bobcats surged from No. 6 in the preseason Class 2-A state poll to No. 1 in the latest 2-A state rankings by the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association.

Northeastern is the four-time defending PIAA Class 2-A state champion. The Bobcats, however, had to replace their entire starting lineup from a season ago. As a result, they started the preseason ranked No. 6 in 2-A.

Over the season's first weekend, however, Northeastern swept past preseason No. 1. Beaver Country Christian on the road on Friday and then earned the Saegertown Invitational championship on Saturday, beating Cambridge Springs in the finals.

As a result, the Bobcats have returned to their usual No. 1 position in the state 2-A rankings.

The rest of the 2-A top 10 included: 2. Manheim Central; 3. Beaver County Christian; 4. Cambridge Springs; 5. Saegertown; 6. Fort Lebouf; 7. Holy Redeemer; 8. Ambridge; 9. Bishop Guilfoyle; 10. Palmyra.

In Class 3-A, Central York moved up one spot from No. 3 to No. 2 in the rankings, trailing only North Allegheny. Dallastown, meanwhile, moved from No. 10 to No. 9 in 3-A. The latest complete PVCA 3-A state rankings are as follows: 1. North Allegheny; 2. Central York; 3. Hempfield; 4. Central Dauphin; 5. Penn Manor; 6. Emmaus; 7. Seneca Valley; 8. Penn Trafford; 9.
