Many of state's top boys' volleyball teams set to compete in this weekend's Koller Classic
Some of the top teams in the state will converge on Central York High School this weekend for the 2015 Koller Classic boys' volleyball tournament.
The junior varsity division begins play at 4 p.m. Friday, while the varsity division starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Defending state Class AA champion Northeastern highlights an impressive list of some of the most elite AA programs in Pennsylvania. Perennial AAA powers Hempfield, North Allegheny and Parkland will also compete vs. the host team, Central York, the defending AAA state champion.
Perennial state powers Ambridge (AA), Cambridge Springs (AA), Cumberland Valley (AAA), Emmaus (AAA), Montour (AA), Pennsbury (AAA) and State College (AAA) will be joined by Fair Lawn High School of New Jersey to lend a state-wide and interstate flavor to the event. Ambridge is the defending tournament champion.
York-Adams teams Dallastown and York Suburban will be joined by Penn Manor of the Lancaster-Lebanon League and Chambersburg of the Mid-Penn Conference to give the 2015 tournament a strong District 3 representation.
In all, a total of 20 teams will show up to serve, dig, spike and block their way to the championship trophy. When the dust settles, Bruce Koller (the Central head coach from 1970-2001) will be on hand to present the championship awards.
The Koller Classic was started 40 years ago by Coach Koller.
Tickets will be sold at the door. Ticket prices on both days are $2 for students and $5 for adults. Concessions will also be sold. All proceeds benefit the Central boys' volleyball team through the Central York Athletic Booster Club.
