RED LION — When Dallastown's Drake Pew reflects on the 2016 York-Adams Senior All-Star Soccer Game, he'll remember the camaraderie as much as the competition.
"We hate each other during the season, we want to put each other in the dirt. But when it comes down to this, we love each other," Pew said following Wednesday night's all-star clash at Horn Field. "It's a great group of guys. You put guys from Central, Dallastown and Red Lion together on the same field and we're going to bond."
Pew, Central's Pierrce Miller and South Western's Jacob Wells scored goals for the Blue team, which defeated the Red club, 3-1. The Blue team was made up of players from York-Adams Division I and Division III schools. The Red team was comprised of players from York-Adams Division II and III schools.
All of the scoring in the annual contest took place in the second half.
Biglerville teammates Fisher Taylor and Jared Dotson-Jones gave Red the lead when they teamed up for the game's first goal at 30 minutes, eight seconds of the second half.
Taylor deflected Dotson-Jones' corner kick into the net to open the scoring.
The Blue club responded with three unanswered goals.
Wells got the equalizer at 17:12 on a pass from South Western teammate Charles Klecker.
"We were playing together on the left side the whole second half, it was awesome," Wells said.
Pew then put his team ahead for good a little less than four minutes later when he ripped a free kick from 30 yards just under the crossbar.
"I take them (free kicks) for our school team," Pew said. "We had a practice (for the all-star game), and I said, 'Guys, if we get a free kick, I'm taking it first.'
He added, "It's kind of sad that the season is over, but this is a good way to end it on a high note."
Miller also converted a free kick, from just outside the box, to conclude the scoring.
"We were on a counter attack, and one of our guys got fouled," Miller said. "I thought it was a (penalty kick) at first, but it was right outside the box."
Mlller enjoyed his night playing on the same team with regular-season rivals.
"We had a nice bond together. It was our last time playing (in high school) and we really looked forward to this game at the end of the season."
Blue team goalie, Carlos Garcia of New Oxford, made a tremendous leaping save with just 2:25 remaining in the first half to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Sportsmanship awards for the regular season were presented at halftime to Spring Grove (Division I), Kennard-Dale (Division II) and Biglerville (Division III).
Red Lion coach Mike Watt and Dallastown coach Matt Zimmerman led the Blue club, while York Suburban's John Fornadel and Susquehannock's Brett Maxwellcoached the Red team.
Mike Epler, Seth Arnold and Bob Snelbaker donated their services as officials.
