Shooting 4 Peace: Ex-NBA players, local stars to meet

York High School will play host to one of two central Pennsylvania inspirational all-star games as part of the Shooting 4 Peace program.

Athletes at the Voni Grimes Gym in York are spoken to by former NFL player and Olympic bobsledder Greg Harrell during a Shooting 4 Peace event on April 4.

The program visits communities looking to diminish violence by speaking about peace to students and the entire community. The message being relayed comes from former NBA players. The players will visit schools in the York City School District over the course of the week, speaking at assemblies and community events, before taking part in a charity all-star game between the former NBA players and a homegrown all-star team.

The game will take place on Friday, April 21, at 7 p.m. at York High and will be one of two games played that weekend, with the second being held at Harrisburg High School the following afternoon at 3 p.m.

The message being relayed to the students and community is to find different avenues in life that don't include drugs, gangs and violence.

Tickets for the game cost $5 and each ticket sold will be entered into a drawing for a chance to shoot a half-court shot at halftime to win $10,000.

Among the former NBA players taking part are former first-round pick Anthony Bonner and Mike James, an NBA champion as part of the 2003-04 Detroit Pistons. The local all-star team will have a number of current and former college players on it, including NCAA Division I products Sam Sutton (York High) and Four McGlynn (Dallastown) and Division II player Montrel Morgan (York High).

Shooting 4 Peace originally began in Baltimore as an event to pay tribute to the one-year anniversary of the death of Freddie Gray. After having so much success with that event, the program looked to make an impact in other communities.

The event is being organized by Christian Business Men's Connection, a group of Christian businessmen in York and Harrisburg, in collaboration with local churches and community organizations.
