Area basketball coaches will have an opportunity to learn from one of the game’s best on Saturday, Oct. 28, when Penn State York plays host to legendary coach Bob Hurley Sr.
Hurley will offer a coaches' clinic from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., as well as an evening program at 6 p.m. in the school’s Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center. Both programs are sponsored by the Penn State York athletic department and men’s basketball program.
Hurley is best known for his work as head basketball coach at St. Anthony's High School in Jersey City, New Jersey, where his teams won 28 New Jersey state championships and four national titles during his tenure. Hurley was also a 2017 ESPY Award winner as “Best Coach," and he is also a three-time USA Today Coach of the Year. He was inducted to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.
Hurley is also known as the father of Bobby Hurley Jr. and Danny Hurley, who both excelled in college basketball and are now both college basketball head coaches. Bobby played at Duke and now coaches Arizona State, while Danny played at Seton Hall and coaches Rhode Island.
“Having legendary and Hall of Fame Coach Bob Hurley Sr. (grace) the campus of Penn State York is an amazing opportunity for every player and coach across the midstate to learn basketball, and hear his life's journey in the game,” Penn State York’s men’s basketball head coach Parrish Petry said in a news release. “Coach Hurley is perhaps the greatest high school basketball coach in the history of the game."
The coaches’ clinic is designed for coaches of all age groups, from youth to advanced levels. Hurley will be on the court instructing and demonstrating various drills and techniques. He will also share coaching tips that made him famous.
During the evening sessions, entitled "An Evening with Coach Bob Hurley," the coach will share his life story, passion for coaching and talk about handling the pressure of being one of the best coaches in the nation.
Following his evening presentation, Hurley will answer questions, sign autographs and do a book signing.
The cost for each session is $20 individually. There is also on option to attend both sessions for $30. Tickets are on sale now through the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center box office, or by visiting pullocenter.showare.com.
