DISTRICT 3 BASEBALL, TUESDAY, MAY 28: Josh Topper pitches Gettysburg to 5-A title game
The Gettysburg Warriors are headed to the District 3 Class 5-A title game, thanks largely to a sparkling pitching performance from Josh Topper.
The third-seeded Warriors punched their ticket to the title contest with a 4-0 triumph over second-seeded Lampeter-Strasburg at Cumberland Valley High School.
Gettysburg (21-3) is chasing its first-ever district baseball crown. The Warriors have already clinched a state playoff berth.
Topper pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out four and walking one. He needed 100 pitches to complete the gem.
His teammates provided him with more than enough offensive support, pounding out eight hits, including three from Simeon Davis, who also had an RBI. One of Davis' hits was a double. Zach Ketterman also doubled for the Warriors, scoring two runs and driving in one run.
In the title game, Gettysburg will face fourth-seeded Cedar Cliff (20-3), which earned a 4-3 triumph in its Tuesday semifinal vs. top-seeded Red Land (20-3). The championship contest is 4:30 p.m. Thursday at PeoplesBank Park in York.
Hamburg 10, Kennard-Dale 0 (5 innings): At Ephrata, Kennard-Dale's hopes for a District 3 Class 4-A title were dashed with a semifinal loss.
Despite the loss, the seventh-seeded Rams (13-7) still have a chance to earn a state playoff berth by winning the district 4-A third-place game at 4 p.m. Thursday at War Memorial Stadium in Ephrata. K-D will face fourth-seeded Octorara (14-7), which lost to top-seeded East Pennsboro (21-2) in the other district 4-A semifinal, 11-1, in another five-inning game.
The Rams managed just three hits off Hamburg starter Colby Gromlich. Max Cooper had two of the hits for K-D, including a double.
Third-seeded Hamburg improved to 19-6.
Oley Valley 9, Biglerville 0 (5 innings): At PeoplesBank Park in York, the Canners fell in the District 3 Class 3-A championship game.
The game was called after five full innings because of rain.
OV's Garet Blankenbiller pitched a complete-game one-hitter, striking out four and walking one.
Top-seeded Biglerville fell to 16-7. Second-seeded Oley Valley improved to 15-6.
In the first round of the state 3-A playoffs on Monday, Biglerville will face the District 6 champion at a site and time to be determined.
