Missed opportunities cost West York in PIAA baseball setback against Dallas

A West York baseball season that looked like it was going nowhere early in the season ended in the PIAA Class 4-A state quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Bulldogs suffered a 2-0 loss to District 2 champion Dallas at Walter M. Stump Stadium in Pine Grove.

West York, the third-place finisher from District 3, finished at 14-12 after sitting at 7-9 more than midway through the season. The strong finish allowed West York to earn a share of the York-Adams Division III title.

In Thursday's setback, West York got a strong start from Justin Wetzel, who allowed two runs over 6 1/3 innings before reaching his pitch-count limit. Colton Kubicki finished up in relief.

West York had several strong opportunities to score, including a second-and-third situation with no outs in the first. The Bulldogs also stranded two runners in the second and left the bases loaded in the sixth.

Darren Kerdesky and Josh Lydon combined on the shutout for Dallas, which improved to 12-7 and moves to the state semifinals.
