BASEBALL: West York blanks ELCO, moves to 4-A quarters
West York earned a 5-0 upset road triumph at ELCO on Monday to advance to the District 3 Class 4-A baseball quarterfinals.
The No. 10 seed Bulldogs improved to 11-10, while No. 7 seed ELCO finished at 15-6.
West York will now travel to meet York County rival Susquehannock at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Glen Rock. The No. 2 seed Warriors (16-4) had a first-round bye.
Zach Gettys pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings to get the victory before he reached his 100-pitch limit.
West York jumped to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second, with Gettys delivering a two-run double. Zion Neuman added an RBI double in the frame, while and Colton Kubicki had an RBI single.
Kutztown 3, York Catholic 1: At Fredericksburg, the No. 2 seed Irish got a strong effort on the mound, but it wasn't enough in its District 3 Class 2-A semifinal vs. No. 3 seed Kutztown. Matt Knauer started for the Fighting Irish and went 6 2/3 innnings without allowing an earned run. He gave up eight hits, while striking out two and walking two. The Irish offense was led by Dillon Hippensteel (two hits), Bryce Floyd (two hits), Nick DeMarco (double, RBI) and Knauer (double). York Catholic finished 10-8. Kutztown improved to 12-9.
Biglerville 6, Susquenita 4: At Susquenita, the No. 5 seed Canners downed No. 4 seed Susquenita in a District 3 Class 3-A quarterfinal. Biglerville improved to 11-9. Susquenita finished 12-8. Biglerville will now face top-seeded Oley Valley (16-2) in a Thursday semifinal at a time and site to be determined. Oley Valley had a bye on Monday. Ben Bretzman got the win, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing three earned runs. Noah Ayers added 1 1/3 innings of scoreless, hitless relief. Chase Long (two hits, two runs) and Christopher Runk (two RBIs, one run) led Biglerville's offense. The Canners were helped by four Susquenita errors, leading five unearned runs.
Cedar Cliff 2, Gettysburg 1 (10 innings): At Cedar Cliff, after nine scoreless innings, all the runs were scored in the 10th in a District 3 Class 5-A first-round contest. No. 14 seed Gettysburg finished 13-7. No. 3 seed Cedar Cliff improved to 16-5. Zach Ketterman's RBI double broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the 10th, but Cedar Cliff responded with two runs in the bottom of the 10th on a bases-loaded walk and an error. Gettysburg's Josh Topper pitched 7 2/3 innings of five-hit shutout baseball, but didn't get a decision. Ketterman finished with two hits.
Christian School of York 2, Conestoga Christian 0: At Palmyra, the No. 3 seed Crusaders advanced to the District 3 Class 1-A semifinals with a win over No. 6 seed Conestoga Christian. In Thursday's semifinals, CSY (12-5) will face No. 2 seed Millersburg at a site and time to be determined. Millersburg (11-7) had a bye on Monday. Conestoga Christian finished 5-8.
Central Dauphin 7, Red Lion 1: At Central Dauphin, the Lions' season ended with a District 3 Class 6-A first-round loss. No. 9 seed Red Lion finished 13-7. No. 8 seed Central Dauphin improved to 13-7. The Lions scored in the top of the first but could not reach the plate after that.
