YORK-ADAMS BASEBALL: Bizarre play helps Eastern York to nine-inning win over Fairfield
An bizarre play helped Eastern York capture a 5-4, nine-inning victory at Fairfield on Tuesday afternoon.
The game was the completion of a suspended contest that was started earlier this season.
In the top of the ninth, Eastern's Colby Shimmel (2-for-5) hit a hard grounder to the first baseman with a runner on first. In fielding the ball, it became lodged in the first baseman's jersey as he stood on first base. Both the batter and the runner were granted two bases, putting the runners on second and third. Brandon Knarr then hit a ball to center that scored the two runners before he was thrown out by the center fielder. Knarr then pitched the bottom of the ninth to complete the win and get the save, despite giving up a run. Knarr had earlier pitched two-thirds of an inning in the fifth.
Brandyn Fry got the win, pitching three innings in relief and allowing one run.
Hunter House had three hits for Fairfield, while Chase Stadler had two hits. Dustin Baker pitched a complete-game five-hitter, but took the loss.
Eastern (5-3 overall) remained unbeaten in York-Adams Division III at 5-0.
Gettysburg 4, York Catholic 3 (11 innings): At Gettysburg, in the completion of a suspended game, the Warriors triumphed in 11 innings. Luke Wlazlak had three hits and two RBIs for the winners, while Michael Tempel added two hits. Tyler Martin pitched four shutout innings in relief to get the win. He struck out five and walked one. C.J. Burnside had two hits and an RBI for the Irish, while Dillon Hippensteel added two hits. The loss dropped York Catholic to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in York-Adams Division IV. Gettysburg improved to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in Division III.
Northeastern 7, Daniel Boone 6: At Birdsboro, the Bobcats (7-4) scored seven runs in the fourth inning and held on to defeat the Blazers (4-3). Northeastern plays host to unbeaten West York (7-0) in a key York-Adams Division II battle on Wednesday. West York leads the division at 6-0, while Northeastern is 5-1.
Correction: In Monday's game against Eastern York, York Suburban's Jackson Marshall had a home run and double. The hits were incorrectly attributed to another player.
