Two dozen York-Adams teams earn District 3 berths in volleyball, soccer, field hockey

Susquehannock's Fallou Cisse, left, and West York's Gavin Smyser chase a loose ball during soccer action at Susquehannock High School earlier this season. The Warriors (12-0-0) have earned the No. 1 seed in District 3 Class 3-A.
  • The District 3 playoffs start this week in soccer, volleyball and field hockey.
  • The York-Adams League earned 24 berths in those sports.
  • Susquehannock is the No. 1 seed in the District 3 Class 3-A boys' soccer field.
  • Seven of the Y-A teams enter this week's playoffs with unbeaten records.

A fall sports season that almost didn’t happen at all has now reached the postseason.

The District 3 football playoffs started this past weekend. The golf and tennis seasons are already over for Y-A athletes and the cross country season ends Saturday with the PIAA meet in Hershey.

Now, the volleyball, field hockey and soccer teams are set to join the postseason fun later this week.

The district has officially set the pairings for those sports and a total of 24 York-Adams teams have earned postseason berths — seven in girls’ volleyball, six in field hockey, six in girls’ soccer and five in boys’ soccer. The berths were determined by District 3 power ratings following Saturday’s contests.

The playoffs will look markedly different this season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which almost prevented the fall season from occurring at all. Because of the pandemic, the number of district qualifiers has been reduced and all of the playoffs will feature a one-and-done format. There won’t be any second chances in consolation brackets.

The smaller brackets also mean that teams with mediocre records didn't make the cut. All of the 2020 Y-A district qualifiers in soccer, volleyball and field hockey will boast records with a winning percentage of .667 or better. In fact, of the 24 Y-A qualifiers, seven will enter the district playoffs with zero losses.

Another twist this year is that none of the Y-A teams have faced nonleague foes this season. Again, because of the pandemic, the Y-A teams were only permitted to play league contests. As a result, without any nonleague matches for perspective, it may be difficult to determine how the local teams will stack up against foes from around the district.

Boys’ soccer: The only York County team to earn a No. 1 seed in field hockey, volleyball or soccer is the Susquehannock boys’ soccer outfit, which is coming off a 12-0-0 season that included a York-Adams Division II championship. The Warriors are seeded No. 1 in 3-A.

The other boys’ soccer teams to make districts from the Y-A League are D-I champion Northeastern (12-2-0, No. 5 in 4-A), Dallastown (10-3-1, No. 7 in 4-A), York Suburban (10-2-0, No. 7 in 3-A) and D-III champion York Catholic (11-0-1, No. 3 in 1-A).

Girls’ soccer: In the district girls’ soccer playoffs, the top-seeded Y-A team will be D-III co-champion Fairfield (10-1-1), which is No. 1 in 1-A. York Catholic (9-3-0) is seeded No. 3 in that same bracket.

The other Y-A teams in the girls’ soccer playoffs are D-I champion Central York (14-0-0, No. 3 in 4-A), Dallastown (12-2-0, No. 7 in 4-A), D-II champion Gettysburg (12-0-0, No. 3 in 3-A) and D-III co-champion Bermudian Springs (10-1-1, No. 4 in 2-A). Bermudian is coming off a 2-0 win over York Catholic on Saturday.

Girls’ volleyball: In girls’ volleyball, D-II champion York Suburban (14-0-0) and D-III champion York Catholic (12-0-0) earned No. 2 seeds — Suburban in 3-A and York Catholic in 2-A. The Irish will face a familiar foe in the district semifinals — D-III runner-up Delone Catholic (10-2-0). The Squirettes earned the No. 3 seed. Delone’s only losses this year came to York Catholic.

'Special group' could take York Catholic girls' volleyball program to great heights

D-I co-champion Spring Grove (10-2-0) is No. 3 in 3-A, while D-I co-champion South Western is No. 6 in 4-A.

In the latest Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association rankings, York Catholic is No. 4 in 2-A and Suburban is No. 4 in 3-A. Spring Grove comes in at No. 6 in 3-A and Delone is No. 10 in 2-A.

The other Y-A teams in the girls’ volleyball field are West York (8-4-0), which is No. 8 in 3-A, and Littlestown (8-4-0), which is No. 4 in 2-A.

Field hockey: In field hockey, the top seeds from the Y-A League are D-II champion New Oxford (11-1-0) and D-IV champion Bermudian Springs (13-0-0). Both are No. 2 seeds, New Oxford in 2-A and Bermudian in 1-A.

In the quarterfinals, Bermudian will play host to its Adams County rival, Biglerville (9-3-1), which is the No. 7 seed in 1-A.

D-I champion Dallastown (12-1-0) is the No. 3 seed in 3-A, while Central York (11-2-0) is the No. 6 seed in that same bracket. The Wildcats are coming off their first loss of the season over the weekend, 6-1 vs. Central York.

The only other Y-A team in the district field hockey playoffs is D-III champion Eastern York (10-3-0), which is No. 4 in 1-A. Eastern clinched the D-III crown on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Fairfield.
