PREP ROUNDUP: Teams from Central York and Kennard-Dale earn York-Adams doubles titles

Central York's Rachel Haupt and Audrey Stewart lived up to their No. 1 seeding on Thursday during the York-Adams League Class 3-A Girls' Tennis Doubles Championship at New Oxford High School.

It wasn't easy, however.

The Panthers battled through three sets to subdue the second-seeded team of Lexi Lakatosh and Sophie Lanius from Red Lion, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

Both the Panthers the Lions rolled to straight-set victories in the semifinals. The Panthers beat the fifth-seeded team from Gettysburg, Kaitlyn Then and Kim Heinzelmann, 6-0, 6-4. The Lions downed the sixth-seeded team from Dallastown, Gracie Heird and Kyle Sciuto, 6-3, 6-2. 

Then and Heinzelmann downed Heird and Sciuto in the third-place match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

In Class 2-A, the second-seeded team from Kennard-Dale, featuring Brianna Serruto and Tori Santoriello, beat the top-seeded team from Delone Catholic, featuring Olivia Roth and Ella Knox, 6-3, 6-0. The K-D team did not lose a set in the tournament.

In the semifinals, the Rams downed the third-seeded team from West York (Alisa Steele and Lexi Sanderson), 6-4, 7-5. The Delone team, meanwhile, outlasted another doubles team from K-D (Grace Maccarelli and Shannon Fletcher), 5-7, 7-6 (1), 6-4. Maccarelli and Fletcher were seeded fifth.

In the third-place match, Maccarelli and Fletcher downed Steele and Sanderson, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

Both Y-A title teams will now advance to the District 3 doubles event.

Additionally, the draws for the District 3 girls' tennis singles championships have been released.

In 3-A, Y-A singles champion Lakatosh is seeded No. 4 and will face defending 3-A champion Catherine Rabatin of Penn Manor.

In 2-A, Y-A champion Evelyn Whiteside, a junior from Eastern York, is seeded No. 2 and will face No. 3 seed Rebekah Schnatz, a senior from Berks Catholic.

The singles championships will begin Monday at the Hempfield Rec Center in Landisville with semifinals. Matches begin at noon. The finals will be contested Wednesday, also at Hempfield Rec Center, beginning at 12:20 p.m.

Only the district champions will advance to the state tournament.

BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY

South Western 16, Dover 46: At Hanover, Shernel Singh led the Mustangs to the York-Adams League Division I victory by taking first in 17:15. Also for South Western, Shernan Singh took second, Evan Freil took third and Austin Tyler took fourth. For the Eagles, Jenson Glatfelter took fifth. South Western won the division title at 6-0.

GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY

South Western 15, Dover 50: At Hanover, Alexis Plesic led the Mustangs to the D-I victory by taking first in 23:16. Also for the Mustangs, Katerina Luckabaugh took second, Brooke Ridenour took fourth and Abrielle Benbow took fifth. For the Eagles, Chelsea Ezibe took third. 

FIELD HOCKEY

Central York 3, South Western 0: At Central, the Panthers improved their D-I record to 4-1. Victoria Whitehead led the Panthers by scoring two second-half goals. Emily Myers added assists on all three goals. Lauren Yarnish scored a first-half goal. 

Red Lion 7, Dover 0: At Red Lion, Kennedy Bratton led the Lions by scoring five goals. Hannah Downs scored one goal and added one assist, while Jenna Derouaux scored one goal and Emma Waltemyer added one assist. 

York Suburban 1, Spring Grove 0: At Sprint Grove, Morgan Shealer scored the game-winner with 14 seconds left for the Trojans.

New Oxford 2, Northeastern 1: At New Oxford, Makayla Batts and Ally Mathis had first-half goals, while Carrie Bair had a pair of assists for the Colonials. Jaiden Bainbridge scored for Northeastern, off an assist from Alana Drake. New Oxford improved to 6-0 in D-II.
