West York baseball, Central softball going to states

The West York baseball team and Central York softball team are headed to the state playoffs.

The Bulldogs and the Panthers punched their PIAA tickets with must-win victories on Thursday in District 3 third-place contests.

The West York baseball team pounded West Perry 8-1 in the District 3 Class 4-A third-place battle, while the Central York softball team defeated Central Dauphin 4-2 in the District 3 Class 6-A third-place contest.

Tenth-seeded West York improved to 13-11, while ninth-seeded West Perry saw its season end at 15-9. The Bulldogs' victory avenged a 12-7 regular-season loss to the Mustangs. A six-run fifth inning sparked the Bulldogs to victory.

West York will take on the District 12 champion on Monday in the first round of the state playoffs. The game is set for George Washington High School in Philadelphia at 4 p.m.

Second-seeded Central York, meanwhile, improved to 23-2, while eighth-seeded Central Dauphin finished at 15-9. The Panthers will take on the District 7 champion in its first-round PIAA contest on Monday.
