PREP: York Catholic earns key baseball win over Delone
Will Catterall’s complete-game effort helped York Catholic defeat rival Delone Catholic, 5-1, and take command of the York-Adams League Division IV baseball race Thursday.
Catterall gave up one run on three hits while striking out six and walking three during seven innings of work.
At the plate, Chris DeMarco, Nick DeMarco and Luke Kordaz each had two hits for the Irish, with Kordaz driving in a run. Teammate Matt Knauer recorded a double and drove in a run.
The Irish improved to 9-7 overall and 9-5 in D-IV. The Squires fell to 8-7 and 8-5. York Catholic looks to clinch at least a share of the division title with a win Monday at Fairfield.
If the Irish win, Delone Catholic would need to beat Biglerville at home on the same day and then turn around and defend their diamond against Eastern York the next day to be declared co-champions. An Irish loss leaves the door open for the Squires to swoop in and take the outright title with a pair of victories.
If the two finish with the same record, co-division champions will be declared, but a tiebreaker will be implemented to determine the D-IV representative for the league playoffs. In that case, York Catholic owns the tiebreaker because of two wins in head-to-head meetings vs. the Squires.
