Winning a District 3 championship has its advantages, beyond just earning a trophy and wearing gold medals.

A trio of district champions from the York-Adams League will reap the rewards of winning those titles on Tuesday evening.

That's when PIAA state playoff action starts in girls' volleyball, boys' and girls' soccer and field hockey.

Girls' volleyball: Two District 3 girls' volleyball champions from the York-Adams League will get to play in a very familiar and very close venue — Central York High School's gym.

In the first game at 6 p.m. on the Panthers' home floor, Delone Catholic, the District 3 Class 2-A champion, will face District 12 runner-up Wyncote Bishop McDevitt.

In the second game, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Red Lion, the District 3 Class 4-A champion, will meet Garnett Valley, the fifth-place team from District 1 (suburban Philadelphia).

York-Adams League champion Red Lion is coming off a stirring come-from-behind triumph over Hempfield in the district title match on Saturday, 11-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-18, 15-10. It was the Lady Lions' first-ever girls' volleyball district crown.

York-Adams Division III champion Delone, meanwhile, earned its 11th district girls' volleyball title on Saturday by sweeping parochial rival York Catholic, 25-10, 25-13, 25-22. it was the third time Delone swept York Catholic this season.

Two other York-Adams teams qualified for the state girls' volleyball playoffs in Class 3-A, but both will have to travel.

York Suburban, the third-place team from District 3, will travel to Wyncote's Bishop McDevitt to take on District 12 champion Cardinal O'Hara in a match starting at 4:30 p.m.

West York, the fourth-place team from District 3, will journey to Upper Dublin High in Fort Washington to face District 1 champion Gwynedd Mercey in a match beginning at 4 p.m.

Both trips are approximately 100 miles.

Suburban is coming off a 25-20, 20-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-13 victory over West York in the district third-place match on Saturday. For the Trojans, that avenged two regular-season losses to the Bulldogs, who claimed the York-Adams Division II crown.

Soccer: In girls' soccer, District 3 Class 1-A champion Fairfield will meet District 1 champion Christian Academy at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Northeastern.

York-Adams Division III champion Fairfield earned the district title last Wednesday with a 6-1 victory over Division III rival York Catholic. It was the Green Knights' third win of the season over the Lady Irish.

The Irish also earned a state playoff bid, but will have to hit the road, facing District 4 champion Warrior Run in Hughesville at 5 p.m. Tuesday. That's another journey of approximately 100 miles.

In boys' action, District 3 Class 3-A runner-up Gettysburg will battle District 12 champion Archbishop Wood at the South Philadelphia Supersite at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Gettysburg fell in the district title match on Thursday vs. Lower Dauphin, 3-0.

District 3 Class 2-A runner-up Biglerville will take on District 12 champion Lansdale Catholic at the Germantown Supersite at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Biglerville dropped its district title match on Saturday, 5-0, to Tulpehocken.

Both Gettysburg and Biglerville will make road trips in excess of 130 miles.

Field hockey: There is only one York-Adams League team still alive in the state field hockey playoffs — Gettysburg in Class 2-A.

The Warriors, the sixth-place team from District 3, will meet District 1 champion Merion Mercy at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Avon Grove High School — a trip of about 90 miles.

Gettysburg dropped its District 3 fifth-place match on Saturday vs Lampeter-Strasburg, 2-1.
