Last weekend was a very busy one for many sprint drivers on the local racing circuit.
The 410 sprint drivers had a shot at four races in three days, and in the end, there were four drivers who made it to all four races. Two of the four scored wins over the weekend, while only one driver, but not one of the winners, scored top-10 finishes in all four races.
Freddie Rahmer started the weekend with a win at Port Royal Speedway on Friday evening and then finished ninth at Lincoln Speedway's Saturday afternoon show. That’s when the weekend turned sour for Rahmer, who was involved in crashes at both BAPS Motor Speedway on Saturday night and Selinsgrove Speedway on Sunday afternoon.
Lucas Wolfe, on the other hand, started the weekend badly, but rebounded nicely. He dropped out with mechanical failure at the Port, then had finishes of fifth at Lincoln, third at BAPS and a win at Selinsgrove.
T.J. Stutts was the driver who managed all top-10 finishes over the four races with finishes of sixth, seventh, 10th and sixth.
The fourth driver to compete in all four 410 sprint races was Dylan Cisney, who for most of the season raced only at Port Royal. Cisney started the weekend with a fifth-place finish at the Port, followed by a third at Lincoln, a crash at BAPS and a fifth at Selinsgrove. It should be noted that Cisney had never raced a sprint car at Lincoln. The last time he raced there was in a super sportsman car many years ago. He finished third that time as well.
There were a number of teams that raced at Lincoln and BAPS on Saturday. By my count, there were at least 14 teams in the 410 sprints that raced both places. Among the 358 sprints, at least 15 teams made the 25-mile tow between the two tracks.
Hanover’s Dylan Norris had a banner day in the 358 sprints. The teenage driver had a win and a second at Lincoln, and backed it up with fifth- and sixth-place finishes at BAPS.
The super late models had a busy day on Saturday, as well, with several teams competing at Selinsgrove in the afternoon and Hagerstown that night. Dylan Yoder fared the best of the four who attempted the double. Yoder won at Selinsgrove and finished third at Hagerstown.
Dover’s Coleby Frye had the worst luck. After a third-place finish at Selinsgrove, Frye had a flat tire on the way to Hagerstown and never made it there.
The feel-good story of the weekend had to be the 410 sprint win by Spring Grove’s Tim Glatfelter at Lincoln on Saturday afternoon. It had been nine years since Glatfelter had won a sprint race during his rookie season. Glatfelter’s team is a low-dollar, family operation that took a great loss when Tim’s father, Chris, died a few years ago. In victory lane, Glatfelter explained that he has good equipment, but only one of everything, unlike many teams that have many spares.
The first career 358 sprint win by Wellsville’s Chris Frank at Lincoln would probably rank a close second in the feel-good category. Frank has come close on occasion before, but Saturday was the first time he visited victory lane. He also put together a nice day on Saturday, with finishes of first and fourth at Lincoln and seventh and ninth at BAPS.
This weekend: Things will have calmed down quite a bit on the local racing circuit by this weekend, with only two racing events scheduled.
Port Royal has Open-Wheel Madness on Saturday. The 410 sprints, 360 sprints and 305 sprints will compete.
The 410 sprint portion of the program will be an Outlaw Tune-Up, with World of Outlaws race procedures used to line up the races. The following weekend, the World of Outlaws will race at the Port on Friday and Saturday evenings. The Saturday show that weekend will be the rescheduled Tuscarora 50, with $51,000 on the line for the winner.
The other racing program this weekend is the annual Kart Klassic at Trailway on Saturday.
Third Sunday Round Table: This will be the third Sunday of the month, which means the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing will play host to a Third Sunday Round Table.
The topic is drivers' wives and daughters. This time around, the participants will include Kay Wolfe, a longtime museum supporter whose late husband was George Wolfe, a former driver, car owner and track promoter; Kay Lingle, whose husband Joe was a driver in the 1960s and 1970s; and Jo Wolford, daughter of late racing legend Gary Wolford.
1984: The only race for the local sprints on this weekend in 1984 was a Sunday afternoon special at the Bridgeport, New Jersey, oval.
Brian Seidel, who ended the season on a hot streak at Selinsgrove, drove his father’s No. 98 to his seventh win of the season.
