YORK COLLEGE: Spartans' golf team takes McDaniel Spring Invitational at Bridges Golf Club

  • The York College golf team won the McDaniel Spring Invitational on Sunday.
  • The Spartans finished tied with Franklin & Marshall, but took the tiebreaker.
  • The top four teams in the event finished within two shots of each other.

The York College men's golf team captured its second tournament title of the spring season on a cold-and-breezy Sunday.

The Spartans took the McDaniel Spring Invitational at the par-72 Bridges Golf Club near Abbottstown.

York sat in seventh place in the nine-team event after Saturday's first round, 11 shots behind the host school. The Spartans, however, shaved 16 shots off their team total on Sunday, going from a 322 on Saturday to a 306 on Sunday.

That left York in a tie for first place at 628 with Franklin & Marshall. The Spartans, however, won the tiebreaker, which goes to the team with the best fifth-place individual score. York's fifth-best golfer, Matthew Chalupa, finished with a 163 total, good for 24th place, compared to F&M's Ian Murray, who finished at 172.

Only the top four individual scores counted for each team's score. York's top four finishers were sixth-place Tyler Newton (154), 10th-place Zach Billings (156), 12th-place Morgan Uhlick (158) and 19th-place Luke Fayocavitz (161).

St. John Fisher's Colin McGaugh won the individual title at 150. McDaniel finished third as a team at 629, while Gettysburg was fourth at 630. Just two shots separated the top four teams.



Softball team earns split: The York College softball team earned a split at Frostburg State on Sunday, losing the opener, 2-1 in nine innings and winning the second game 8-0 in five innings.

York is 17-7 overall and 4-2 in the Capital Athletic Conference, while Frostburg is 13-9 and 2-2.

Pitcher Melissa Jurkiewicz got the shutout for York. Joanna Marmo had three hits, including a double, and an RBI in the victory, while Haley Hirn homered and drove in two runs. Marmo also had three hits in the first-game loss, including a double, while Ashley Meekins homered.

Baseball team splits: The York College baseball team also garnered a split on Sunday at home vs. Wesley, losing the opener, 7-6, while winning the second game, 8-7.

York is 9-12-1 overall and 2-5 in the CAC. Wesley is 8-15 and 2-7.

Overall in the doubleheader, York was led by Kennard-Dale grad Colin Crowell (four hits, three RBIs), Grant Oberholtzer (four hits), Zach Hossler (four hits), Seth Brosius (four hits, four RBIs), Jack Barry (three hits, including a homer, three RBIs), York Catholic grad Patrick Clement (three hits) and Rob Acierno (three hits, just in Game 2.).
