After a 16-0 start to the season, the York College men's basketball team has suddenly hit a road block.
The Spartans suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday, Jan. 20, at Mary Washington, 59-57.
They followed that with another Capital Athletic Conference setback at Frostburg State on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 95-85.
York dropped to 16-2 overall and 9-2 in the CAC. The Spartans dropped into a first-place tie with Salisbury. Frostburg improved to 7-10 and 6-5.
The Spartans, ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division III in the latest d3hoops.com poll, struggled defensively, allowing Frostburg to shoot 54 percent from the field, including 59 percent from 3-point range (13 for 22).
Matt Scamuffo led York with 21 points. He got double-digit support from Central York High School graduate Jared Wagner (16 points), Blayde Reich (14 points) and Jason Bady (11 points). Bady and Reich each had eight rebounds.
York women triumph: After a slow start, the York women used a 29-13 third-quarter surge to take control of the game en route to a 79-66 triumph over Frostburg in the opening game of the night.
The Spartans led just 33-31 at halftime.
York improved to 12-6 overall and 8-3 in the CAC. The Spartans are tied for third place in the conference. Frostburg fell to 8-10 and 4-7.
Sam Mocniak paced York with 15 points. Susquehannock grad Katie Wagner added 14 points and four assists, while Dallastown grad Katie McGowan collected 10 points and 10 rebounds. Wagner is now just 20 points short of 1,000 for her career.
New Oxford grad Haley Luckabaugh came off the bench to add a career-high 12 points, all in the second quarter, including 10 straight points during one stretch. The freshman entered the game with just 19 career points in her York career.
Red Lion grad Morgan Kuehne added eight points and nine rebounds.
