The York College men's basketball team made a major jump in the latest d3hoops.com NCAA Division III national rankings released on Tuesday night, Jan. 2.
The unbeaten Spartans are now No. 13, moving up from the No. 25 position they held in the most recent previous ranking.
The Spartans are 11-0 for the first time in the 49-year history of the men's basketball program.
York is coming off a pair of overtime victories en route to winning the Washington & Lee Holiday Tournament title. One of those OT wins came against Middlebury, which was ranked No. 2 by d3hoops.com at the time. The other win came over the host school.
One of the big reasons York was able to win that championship was because of senior forward Blayde Reich, who was named the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 31 on Tuesday.
Reich began his weekend with 15 points and 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double vs. Middlebury.
Reich saved his best for Saturday when the Spartans came back from an 18-point deficit to pick up a 118-110 overtime win over the host Generals to earn the title. Reich poured in a career-high 44 points while he also pulled in a career-high 19 rebounds. He was 16-for-23 from the floor, 3-for-5 from 3-point range and 9-for-12 from the free-throw line. His 44 points is tied for second on the Spartans' single-game scoring list while the 19 rebounds are three short of Jason Hunt's school record of 22. Nine of his 44 points came in the decisive overtime.
Reich earned tournament MVP honors after averaging 29.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game. He has earned the tournament MVP honors in both of York's tournament championships. He also was the MVP of the Scranton tournament. His 44-point outburst is the top scoring effort in the CAC this season. His 19 rebounds is also the best single-game performance this year in the CAC.
York returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday with a CAC contest at Salisbury (7-4).
