York College men's lacrosse team earns NCAA D-III win


The York College men's lacrosse team put on a dominant performance on Wednesday afternoon in their NCAA Division III men's lacrosse opener

The Spartans pounded Morrisville State, 12-1, at Kinsley Field in York.

Brendan McGrath had four goals and an assist on Wednesday for York College in a 12-1 win over Morrisville State.

York, which came in ranked No. 6 in D-III by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association/Nike poll, improved to 17-3. Morrisville finished at 10-6.

Landry Marshall was stellar in goal for York, making 10 saves.

Brendan McGrath (four goals, assist), Matt Whitcher (two goals, two assists), Austin Glab (two goals, assist), Thomas Pfeiffer (goal, three assists) and Hunter Davis (goal, assist) paced the Spartans' attack.

McGrath broke the Spartans' single-season record for points in a season. He now has 79, beating former Spartan All-American Tyler Hutson's 78-point season in 2013. McGrath's 79 points have come on 56 goals and 23 assists.

The Spartans put together their best defensive performance in their six-game NCAA Tournament history by allowing just one goal against a Morrisville side that entered the game averaging 13.93 goals per game. The Mustangs were held to their lowest offensive output in the last six years.

York owned a 23-11 edge in shots on goal, a 26-14 advantage in ground balls and won 13 of 17 face offs.

The Spartans improved to 4-2 in NCAA action. York is now 4-1 at home in the NCAA Tournament. The win is the Spartans' 17th of the year, one short of tying the school record of 18 set by the 2016 squad (18-4).

In the next round of the NCAA playoffs, the Spartans will face Lynchburg at 4 p.m. Saturday at Kinsley Field.
