York College baseball team drops close one to No. 1 foe

The York College baseball team dropped a close result on the road against top-ranked Shenandoah on Monday, losing 6-4.

York College Spartans

The Spartans (18-18) fell behind early, 4-0, before their bats woke up and generated some offense to make it a game late against the No. 1 team in NCAA Division III.

After spotting the Hornets (34-6) the early lead, York got back into the game with a two-run top of the fifth to pull to within two. Shenandoah tacked on a run in the sixth to make it 5-2 before the Spartans roared back with a two-run top of the eighth to get to within a run. However, the Hornets answered back with an insurance run in the bottom half of the frame to regain its multi-run advantage and York failed to mount a rally in the ninth.

Kennard-Dale graduate Collin Crowell, Seth Brosius, Christian Bilan and Grant Oberholtzer each drove in a run for the Spartans, while Logan Countryman had a three-hit game. Joel Kenney took the loss for York, battling through seven innings, despite surrendering five runs, three earned, on 10 hits and striking out three.

The Spartans will play their final home game of the season at 4 p.m. Tuesday, a Senior Day contest against Elizabethtown.
