The York College baseball and softball teams both blew leads on Sunday, preventing them from achieving doubleheader sweeps.
The Spartans' baseball team blew a 5-0 lead in the second game of its doubleheader, losing 6-5, vs. Marymount.
After scoring four times in the bottom of the second and adding a run in the third, York (12-8, 7-4 Capital Athletic Conference) led 5-0. The Spartans carried that lead into the seventh inning, which is when the Saints (10-13, 4-6 CAC) began their rally. Marymount struck for four runs in the top of the seventh to trim York's lead to just one and then took the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth.
The loss by the Spartans squandered a strong start by Casey Fitzsimmons, who pitched seven innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits with three strikeout. Of his seven innings, only the seventh gave him any trouble, when he surrendered all of his runs and four of his six hits, all of which came with two outs.
In the first game, the Saints also mounted a late-game comeback, but York had an answer, earning a 5-4 walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth. Tied 4-4 going into the last of the ninth, York Catholic grad Patrick Clement provided his second walk-off hit in the last week, winning the game with an RBI single, scoring Logan Countryman from third. The win helped the Spartans avoid losing a game in which they led 4-0 heading into the sixth. Zach Hossler led the Spartans with two RBIs on the day.
Softball team snaps skid with split: Riding a three-game losing streak entering the second game of Sunday's doubleheader at Mary Washington, the York softball team snapped the losing streak with a 4-3 win.
The Spartans (13-9, 1-3 CAC) did all their damage early, scoring all four runs in the first three innings. After opening the game with two runs in the first, York added one in the second and one in the third to hold a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third. The Eagles (19-13, 3-1 CAC) got a run back in the bottom half of that inning and then pulled to within one after four innings. However, the pitching for both teams dominated the rest of the way, allowing the Spartans to hold on for the one-run victory. Haley Hirn and Ashley Werner were each credited with one RBI in the game, while Melissa Jurkiewicz pitched a complete game, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits, with two walks and one strikeout.
In the opener, York blew a 5-2 lead early in the game to lose, 7-5. After spotting Mary Washington a 2-0 lead after the first, the Spartans responded with four runs in the top of the second to grab a 4-2 lead. Carleigh Ruleman added to York's lead with a solo homer in the third to push the Spartans' lead to 5-2. After that, however, the Eagles did all the scoring.
