The York College softball team earned a non-league doubleheader sweep over Eastern University on Monday, winning the first game 8-0 in six innings, before taking the second game 8-3.
The Spartans improved to 12-8. Eastern fell to 2-10.
In the opener, Ginger Lewis pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out eight without a walk. York's offense was led by Savannah Zittle (three hits, two runs, one RBI), Katie Maloney (two hits, triple, one RBI, one run), Joanna Marmo (two hits, one RBI) and Kara Hanson (homer, two RBIs).
In the second game, Melissa Jurkiewicz got the win, improving to 7-4. She went five innings and allowed five hits and two runs. Lewis got the save, pitching two innings and allowing one run. Carleigh Ruleman (three hits, homer, three RBIs, run) and Marmo (triple, three RBIs, run) led York's attack.
Spartans roll to win over Frostburg: The York College women's lacrosse team hung a 12-spot in the first half of its game against Frostburg State en route to a dominating 19-7 road win on Monday.
The Spartans (6-2), ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division III, scored the game's first eight goals and 12 of the first 14 to grab a 12-2 lead, before settling for a 12-4 advantage at halftime. York went on to open the second half with a 5-0 run to extend its lead to 17-4 before Frostburg (5-6) finally snapped the scoring run.
Regan Cook led the Spartans with a four-goal game, while Skye Slater and Claudia Deventi each tallied three goals. York held a 44-11 shot advantage.
Marshall is Spartan Athlete of Week: Junior men's lacrosse goalkeeper Landry Marshall has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week after leading sixth-ranked York College to a pair of Capital Athletic Conference wins.
Marshall began the week with a 16-save performance in a 6-5 win over Frostburg State in the Spartans' CAC opener on Wednesday. The 16 saves were one short of his career high. He followed that with 13 saves in the Spartans' 13-7 road win at Mary Washington.
Marshall was also named the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week.
For the week, Marshall played 120 minutes in goal, recording 29 saves and allowing 12 goals. Marshall's save percentage was 70.7, while he allowed 6.0 goals per game. For the season, Marshall is 10-1 with a 6.76 goals-against average and a .584 save percentage.
