There was no holiday rust on the York College women's basketball team when it returned to action Thursday in the CUNY Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
The Spartans (7-3) routed Alvernia, 90-33.
Alvernia (0-11) shot just 16.7 percent from the field. York, meanwhile, shot 56 percent.
Red Lion grad Morgan Kuehne and Susquehannock grad Katie Wagner led the Spartans with 13 points each, while Dallastown grad Katie McGowan added 12.
York will face host SUNY Poly on Friday in the tournament championship game at 4 p.m.
York men prevail in OT: The Spartan men's basketball team also earned a victory in its tournament opener, albeit in much more challenging fashion.
York needed overtime to knock off Johns Hopkins in the first semifinal of the Randolph-Macon Coaches Tournament, winning 76-72.
The Spartans (7-3) led by four at halftime, but a quick 16-1 run by the Blue Jays (3-5) to open the second half suddenly had York trailing by 11 points on a couple occasions. The Spartans rallied, eventually grabbing a four-point lead in the closing minutes, but couldn't hold off Johns Hopkins, eventually having to go to OT.
In the extra frame, York's defense came up big, holding the Blue Jays to six points and ended the game on an 8-4 run to advance to Friday's final.
Five different Spartans finished in double figures, led by Matt Scamuffo's 17. Spring Grove grad Darin Gordon recorded a career-high nine points in 16 minutes, while Central York grad Jared Wagner posted six points, but also had four steals, including a couple key ones late in the second half and OT. Both Gordon and Wagner came off the bench, but had trouble staying on the court because of foul trouble.
York will face the hosts, Randolph-Macon, in the championship game on Friday, with tip scheduled for 7 p.m. The Yellow Jackets defeated FDU-Florham, 81-61, in the second semifinal.
