  • The York College women fell to No. 10 CNU, 76-64. The Captains improved to 7-0.
  • The York College men suffered an 85-59 setback to the No. 6 Captains. CNU is now 6-1.
  • The York women dropped to 5-3 on the season, while the York men are 5-2.

The York College basketball teams knew their trip south to Newport News, Virginia, on Sunday was hardly going to be a pleasant holiday vacation.

To the contrary, the Spartans were expecting a difficult doubleheader against two of the top teams in the Capital Athletic Conference.

York College's Morgan Kuehne, left, is seen here in action from earlier this season. She led York with 18 points in the Spartans' win over St. Mary's on Wednesday.

The final result was likely not all that surprising — the Christopher Newport University Captains came away with a pair of relatively easy victories.

The unbeaten CNU women's team, which came in ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division III, used a 24-14 third-quarter surge en route to a 76-64 triumph over the Spartans. York dropped to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the CAC, while the Captains improved to 7-0 and 3-0.

The York men didn't fare any better, dropping an 85-59 decision to CNU. The Spartans now sit at 5-2 and 2-1, while the Captains are 6-1, 3-0.

Women's game: In the women's game, the Spartans dropped their second-straight contest to a nationally ranked opponent, following a 57-46 loss to No. 16 Mary Washington on Dec. 3.

Against CNU, a pair of former York County high school standouts led York. Red Lion grad Morgan Kuehne finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Susquehannock grad Katie Wagner added 13 points, six assists, four rebounds and a steal. Sam Hruz chipped in eight points, nine rebounds, five blocks, three steals and two assists, while Brianna Bisci had nine points, three rebounds and three steals.

The key to the game may have been 3-point shooting. York was 3-for-20 (15 percent), while CNU was 9-for-20 (45 percent).

Jessica Daguilh (15 points, 12 rebounds), Anitra Thomas (15 points, four assists), Sam Porter (13 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, five steals) and Makenzie Fancher (nine points, six rebounds, four steals, two assists) paced CNU. Fancher and Wagner were former teammates at Susquehannock.

Men's game: In the men's game, York hung tough for a half, trailing 41-35 at the break, but couldn't keep up in the second half with CNU, which came in ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III.

Dalton Myers (10 points, four rebounds, three assists, two blocks) was the only York player in double digits in points. In contrast, the Captains had four players in double figures, led by Marcus Carter (16 points).

The Spartans shot 35.2 percent from the floor, compared to 50 percent for CNU. The Spartans were also outscored in the paint, 40-22.

Both York teams return to the Grumbacher Center for a CAC doubleheader on Wednesday vs. Wesley. The women's game starts at 6 p.m., followed by the men's game at approximately 8 p.m. The Wesley women will enter at 5-3 and 1-2, while the Wesley men are 3-4 and 2-1.
