The York College women's basketball team continued its hot start to the season with a convincing win on Wednesday night.
The Spartans (5-1 overall and 1-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference) held Penn State Harrisburg to just 11 points in the first half en route to a dominating 60-39 away victory in their CAC opener.
Through the first two quarters, York built a 16-point advantage and continued to increase it in each of the final two quarters. The Spartans outscored PSU Harrisburg (1-4, 0-1 CAC) in all four quarters.
Susquehannock High School grad Katie Wagner led all scorers in the contest with 19 points, also adding four steals, four assists and three rebounds to her stat line. Red Lion grad Morgan Kuehne was the only other York player to reach double figures in the game, posting 11 points and three rebounds. In total, seven different Spartans recorded points, with the starting five accounting for 52 of the team's 60 points. Sam Hruz had seven points and 13 rebounds.
York held PSU Harrisburg to just 24.6 percent shooting from the floor and forced 27 turnovers.
The Spartans have their conference home opener this Saturday against Mary Washington at 1 p.m.
York men begin conference play with win: The Spartan men also began their CAC play with a thorough 86-73 road win over PSU Harrisburg.
With the win, York moves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the CAC, while PSU Harrisburg was handed its second loss, dropping to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The first half was closely contested, with the Spartans ending the opening 20 minutes on a 14-5 run to erase a four-point deficit and carry a five-point lead into the break. After that, York dominated the second half, never relinquishing the lead and eventually pulling away down the stretch.
Blayde Reich led all Spartan scorers with 15 points, while starters Matt Scamuffo (13) and Brad Wesner (12) combined for 25 points. Central York grad Jared Wagner added 10 points and five rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench, while Spring Grove grad Darin Gordon put up six points and three rebounds in 26 minutes as a starter.
York will welcome Mary Washington into town on Saturday, when the two will get together for a 3 p.m. tip at the Grumbacher Center.
PSU York rolls to victory: The Penn State York men's hoops team moved above .500 on the season with a lopsided 84-43 away win over Christendom.
The local Lions improved to 3-2, while Christendom fell to 2-4.
PSY jumped out to a 47-23 halftime advantage and then continued to dominate both ends of the floor in the second half, outscoring the home side by 17 in the final 20 minutes.
Susquehannock grad Richard Grant led all local Lions with 20 points, while Billy Vaughn-Geib added 18 points and finished a rebound shy of a double-double. Red Lion grad Trent Thomas added 11 points.
PSY shot 47 percent from the floor, while holding Christendom to 23 percent shooting.
The local Lions are in action again on Friday night when they play host to PSU Lehigh Valley at 8 p.m.
