The York College field hockey team continued its strong 2016 season on Sunday when it earned a 3-0 win over St. Mary's College in the opening round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament.
The Spartans will now head to Salisbury University to face the top-seeded Sea Gulls on Wednesday in the CAC semifinals. The Sea Gulls captured a 6-2 win over the Spartans on Oct. 12.
York improved to 13-5, while St. Mary's finished 4-12.
The Spartans held a commanding 25-0 edge in shots and a 15-0 edge in shots on goal. They also had a 17-2 advantage in penalty corners.
York got on the scoreboard in the 45th minute when the Spartans cashed in on a corner. Red Lion High School graduate Alexa Taylor inserted the ball to another Red Lion grad, Ali Posey. who sent the ball along the top of the circle. Meghan Heary fired the ball into the circle and Lindsay Nye diverted the ball into the cage for the goal. The goal was Nye's team-leading 18th of the year and gave the Spartans a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The Spartans made it 2-0 just more than 11 minutes later when Beth Patrick carried the ball down the right wing before cutting towards the end line. Patrick struck a perfect centering pass to Autumn Mallory, who blasted the pass into the back of the cage for her ninth goal of the year.
York capped the scoring with 10:46 left in regulation when Alexa Taylor pushed home a loose ball for the Spartan goal. It was Taylor's third goal of the year.
Notes: Nye continues to lead the CAC in scoring with 41 points, while she also leads in goals scored with 18. ... The Spartans' 13 wins are tied for the third-highest total in school history. The Spartan school record for wins in a season is 15 set in 1998. … The Spartans now have five players in double figures in scoring with Nye (41 points) and Posey (30 points) leading the way. Mallory (19 points), Red Lion grad Paige Taylor (18 points) and Alexa Taylor (12 points) have also reached double figures for the Spartans.
