The York College women's soccer squad posted an improbable come-from-behind 3-2 double-overtime Capital Athletic Conference win over St. Mary's College on a chilly Wednesday afternoon in York.
Junior Maxine Herman, a Dover High School graduate, netted the game winner 1 minute and 21 seconds into the second overtime for her third straight game-winning goal for York. The win closes out the regular season for the Spartans. They will head into the upcoming CAC tournament as the fifth seed.
York improved to 7-9-1 overall and 5-4 in the CAC. St. Mary's fell to 9-6-1 and 6-2-1.
Herman finished the game with two goals. Alyssa Rankin had York's other score. Brittany Cullison had six saves to get the win in goal. York rallied from a 2-0 hole to earn the win.
Herman, the reigning CAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, has now scored six goals in the last three games. She has done her damage on 12 shots. Herman leads the Spartans with eight goals and she now has 17 career goals. Herman's eight goals are a career-high. Herman's 17 goals ties her for 10th on the all-time Spartan goal-scoring list.
The Spartans begin defense of their 2015 CAC championship on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Mary Washington to face the Eagles in the opening round of the tournament. The two squads met last year in the championship game, a game that was a 1-0 win for the Spartans in double overtime. Kick off is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Red Lion's Posey shines for field hockey team on Senior Day: The York College field hockey team finished out its 2016 regular season with a 7-0 win over Frostburg State on Senior Day Wednesday afternoon in York.
The Spartans had a total of four different scorers in the win. Red Lion High School graduate Ali Posey led the team with a hat trick.
York improved to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the CAC. Frostburg fell to 5-13 and 0-6.
Two other Red Lion grads also shined for York; Paige Taylor had two goals, while Alexa Taylor had three assists. Anne Measley and Naomi George had York's other goals.
The hat trick for Posey was the fourth of her career. Posey now has 43 goals and 13 assists for a total of 99 points in her 56 career games. Prior to the game, the Spartans honored seniors Sydney LaMarsh and Alexa Taylor.
The Spartans will be the fourth seed in the upcoming CAC tournament. The Spartans will host St. Mary's in an opening-round game in York on Sunday. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start. The winner will head to top-seed Salisbury for the semifinals on Wednesday.
