York College athletes earn weekly honors

York College women's soccer freshman midfielder Georgia Gillcrist was named the Capital Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.

In her first collegiate game, during York College's 2-0 victory against Fredonia on Friday at the Rowan Prof Soccer Classic, Gillcrist assisted on the Spartans' first goal of the season. In York's next game against Emmanuel, Gillcrist scored the first two Spartans goals on the way to a 5-0 win. Her first collegiate goal came in the 11th minute and she followed that up with No,. 2 in the 33rd minute.

Ockford is Spartan Athlete of the Week: York College men's soccer junior defender Ryan Ockford was named the first Spartan Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sept. 4.

Ockford helped York to a pair of victories to open the season, first by scoring a pair of goals to give the Spartans a 3-1 win against Randolph on Thursday. He followed that up Sunday by converting his second penalty kick of the year during a 4-1 win over Alvernia. Ockford's three goals this year doubles his career total (six). He also tallied the eventual game-winner in each of the first two matches this year.

Men's soccer team ties F&M: The York College men’s soccer team drew with Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday night, 1-1, in Lancaster.

Despite getting heavily outplayed in the 110-minute, extra-time match, the Spartans (2-0-1) stayed level with the Diplomats (2-0-1).

York’s Ryan Ockford opened the game’s scoring in the 12th minute to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. They then held on to that lead into halftime and for the first 15 minutes of the second half before F&M finally equalized in the 61st minute by Jason Tonelli. The game stayed that way through the end of regulation and then through two, 10-minute extra time frames.

The Diplomats outshot York, 23-7. Spartans’ keeper Charlie Johnson finished with eight saves.
