York College athletes honored for academic excellence

  • York College had 224 athletes make the CAC All-Academic Team.
  • The Spartans saw 61.5 percent of its athletes recognized.
  • York College athletes had a cumulative grade-point average of 3.24.

York College led the Capital Athletic Conference's All-Academic Team with the most student-athletes selected, it was announced on Tuesday.

The school also had the highest percentage of its athletes make the conference academic list, marking the first time in school history York has achieved that milestone.

The Spartans had 224 athletes make the cut, which is 61.5 percent of the school's 364 athletes. York's previous best was 202 athletes selected to last year's team, good for 52.7 percent. The Spartans have never finished below second in total number chosen and have never finished below third in percentage.

It is the seventh time York has led the conference in total number of selections since the 2006-07 school year. York, by having the highest percentage of athletes chosen, ends an eight-year run by St. Mary's for that mark.

In order to earn a spot on the All-Academic Team, a student-athlete in one or more conference championship sports must attain a 3.2 grade-point average for the academic year. A total of 44.4 percent of the conference's athletes, 1,384 of 3,120, met the requirements this year.

Finishing second behind York in total selections was Salisbury with 183.The second-highest percentage this year belonged to St. Mary's at 53.7 percent.

York also set another school mark, with all 22 varsity teams finishing with a team GPA over 3.0 for the first time in school history. The Spartans' cumulative GPA for the 2015-16 academic year was 3.24, another all-time mark for the institution. Also, 293 Spartan athletes carried a GPA of 3.0 or above this year.
