For the fourth consecutive doubleheader, the York College softball team managed a split.
On Sunday, the Spartans (21-11 overall, 4-4 Capital Athletic Conference) were on the road for the first time in more than a week and took one out of two games against Wesley, losing the first one 3-2 and then winning the second, 8-0.
York ended the second game of the day after just five innings, thanks to the mercy rule. The Spartans scored in four of the five innings, including two runs in the first and fourth innings and three in the fifth. They also scored once in the top of the second. Ashley Werner, Carleigh Ruleman and Katey Maloney all drove in two runs in the game for York, while Courtney Martin improved to 7-3 on the year with a complete game. She scattered five hits in the game, allowing just one walk and striking out five.
In the first game, the Spartans could never fully recover from a first-inning 2-1 deficit against the Wolverines. They trailed the rest of the way, giving up an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, but getting it back in the sixth, but that's all York could muster in a comeback attempt. Melissa Jurkiewicz suffered the tough loss, falling to 11-7 on the year. She pitched a complete game, allowing all three runs on seven hits, a walk and six strikeouts.
York will be back in action on Monday, when it travels to Salisbury for another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. with the second game slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
Men's and women's tennis drop matches: Both the men's and women's Spartan tennis teams dropped their matches on Sunday.
The men's team (5-7 overall, 1-5 CAC), playing its home finale, lost to No. 20 Christopher Newport, 5-0. York failed to win a set in any of the matches, struggling with the nationally-ranked opponent. The men will conclude their season with two road matches at Penn State Harrisburg and McDaniel.
In the women's match, they too fell 5-0 to Christopher Newport, falling to 7-4 on the year and 2-4 in conference play. The Spartans will travel to PSU Harrisburg for their next match at 3:30 p.m.
York College baseball continues slump: The York College baseball continued its losing streak on Sunday, dropping both games of a home doubleheader to Salisbury.
The Spartans lost the first game, 10-4, and then dropped the second game, 8-5. With the two defeats, York's losing streak is extended to eight games and is just 1-11-1 in its last 13 games.
In both contests, the Spartans fell behind big in the opening innings and tried to mount late-inning rallies, coming up short both times.
York will be back in action on Monday at home against Shenandoah looking to snap its long losing skid. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
