The York College baseball team got off to a slow start in 2016 during the non-league portion of its schedule.

Once Capital Athletic Conference action started, however, the Spartans have gone on a bit of a roll.

York improved to 3-1 in the CAC on Wednesday with an 8-0 beat down of St. Mary's, Maryland, at Jaquet Field. York improved to 5-10 overall, while St. Mary's fell to 4-12 and 0-4.

Randy Frankenfield got the win, pitching six innings of one-hit ball, striking out six and walking two. Scott Steffy got the save, pitching three innings of three-hit shutout baseball. He fanned two without a walk.

Offensively, the Spartans were led by York Catholic High School graduate Patrick Clement. The sophomore right fielder went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Designated hitter Steve Miller also had two hits, including a double, with an RBI and a run scored for York, while Susquehannock grad Luke Knott doubled with an RBI and a run scored. Knott is a sophomore third baseman.

York broke open a 3-0 game with a five-run eighth inning.

The Spartans are right back in action on Thursday afternoon at home against Susquehanna in a non-league contest.
